  • Okay, I need your input. Women's World magazine had an article on this... showing examples of how famous people including Angelina Jolie stopped the coffee habit, replaced it with green tea and are losing weight. They aren't talking fad diet here, they are referring to tea's "metabolic" effects. Clearly, coffee is a stimulant but they say it can stimulate things that could keep weight on. Now I know lots of us drink coffee and are still losing weight. What are your thoughts???

    Michelle
  • methinks it is probably their personal trainers taht are contributing to the weight loss. or stress. or not eating. i haven't read the article, but they generally leave out that sort of info...

but tea is yummy. stash's chai tea is soooo good. especially with milk and honey.mmmm
  • I thought I would add some details from the article to see what your thoughts are....

Coffee triggers your fat storage hormone because the caffeine increases body's release of insulin. A coffee shop coffee drink has 500 mg of caffeine, while tea has only 30 mg.

It blocks the absorption of calcium, which is nature's fat-fighting nutrient. Calcium stimulates a type of fat burning tissue that is normally dormant.

Coffee elevates levels of stress hormones which can lead to belly fat. Just 2 cups of coffee a day causes the body to respond the way it does when we're under chronic stress by secreting cortisol.
Fat cells in the belly respond to stress hormones.

Tea boosts metabolism. Five cups of green tea can boost it by up to 5% due to catechin polyphenols that stimulatea type of fat burning.

Green tea can block fat absorption because it contains catechols that can reduce fat from your diet by up to 30%.

Tea fights abdominal fat because it promotes relaxation.

I'd love to hear from you.... your thoughts, experience with the above.

  • From other articles I've read, tea is much more healthy for you than coffee. If you drink coffee (a diuretic), they say to drink a glass or two of water to rehydrate your system.

Does any one have information on Yerba Mate? It's produced in South America and also has antioxidant and energy boosting properties, prepared as a tea.

    Thanks!
  • Green tea
Michkey - thanks for the info on tea. I've heard that drinking 1 c (8 oz) of green tea can burn up to 80 calories. I'm not sure of how valid that is, but I'm sure it's possible.
  • It seems to me that I lose better if I don't drink coffee because I know(for me at least) that my brain seems to make a connection between drinking coffee and wanting to eat something. I guess it is all those years of coffee and donuts or something. When I drink tea, it doesn't make me want to eat. Of course I'm sure if I grew up on tea and cookies instead, then tea would make me want to eat too! LOL
  • Hi,

I haven't read that particular article, but I wonder if they've told the readers any details about where they got their statistics and how the research was done.

As a night owl who really doesn't want to give up her morning coffee, but doesn't want to injure her health, I try to keep up with the latest research on the subject. My reading indicates that so far, the double-blind scientific research shows that drinking moderate amounts of coffee isn't harmful to our bodies. It doesn't cause weight gain or anything else. Drinking a cup or two a day is fine.

Except for herbal teas, tea also contains caffeine. The amount varies depending on the type of tea and the amount you drink. That is also true of coffee. And chocolate. There are teas that have more caffeine than coffee, ounce for ounce. So, if you believe that caffeine is bad for your health, than you would have to eliminate all of these things, not just coffee.

Personal experience: I went without caffeine for a year to see if it would improve my problems with PMS. It didn't. It also didn't affect my wieght one way or the other. So, I happily drink my morning caffeine.

  • Maybe I'm cynical, but I don't believe the study. Most of the other reliable studies and literature review don't seem to support that moderate amounts of coffee have a negative effect. (At least from what I've read.)

I'm wondering if maybe it's what folks put in their coffee that stalls weight loss Jane
  • Just poppin in...
Hi, normally don't venture down here but I've read this article too and wanted to comment.

I'm not sure about the articles reasons for giving up coffee. I do know that most people, when having coffee, will add cream and sugar to it. Cream and sugar day after day can make you fat.
A donut with your coffee will make you fat. And *sigh* one of those delicious Starbucks latte's every day with chocolate sprinkes will make you fat.

If you drink your coffee black and don't get affected by the caffiene I wouldn't worry about it upping your weight too much.
Just make sure to drink enough water in your day along with the java.
  • I read once that coffee makes older people more alert and active -- that was good enough for me!

    Signed,
Sooner(aka Will Use Any Excuse I Can Find Not To Give Up Coffee!)
  • well, my diet coke will keep my body from aging and from needing to be embalmed when i die. of course a steady diet of twinkies will accomplish the same thing.

  • Coffeee helped make me fat for sure :)
I am VERY hypoglycemic, and a long time ago, a nutritionist suggested to me that i should give up coffee, because coffee provokes an insulin repsonse in some people and contributes to further overeating and weight gain in those people who are suceptible to that sort of weight gain.

By no means is this true for everyone, but if you are diabetic, or hyperinsulemic, it might be worth watching out for. I definatley notice that coffee makes me hungrier than tea does, and i'm not sure that its caffeine thats the reason. I also find that drinking extra water, limiting my coffee intake to 2 cups a day and going easy on the pure sugar stuff, mitigates the reaction
  • From what I can tell based on my recent research and Amy's experience is that caffeine definitely stimulates insulin production, which can make weight stubborn, stubborn coming off.

As an experiment, I gave up coffee for tea three days ago. I'm having the time of my life; drinking jasmine tea (green), green tea and red tea (like green tea minus all caffeine and from S Africa).
I bought a Japanese ceramic cup with lid and ceramic infuser and am having fun. I definitely feel more relaxed. There is something about sipping tea that invokes that "ahhh" feeling.

Please let me know what the rest of you think. I'm not looking for miracles here, but I am listening to what my body responds to and in doing so, have experimented with different food combinations. It is true that two people the same height, same weight and on the exact same points can lose at different rates. I'm looking to maximize my efforts... not in a race here, just want to find out what my body responds to best....

  • The benifits of switching to tea
At the begining of the year I vowed to cut back on coffee. I started drinking 1 glass of green tea (the flavored kind) and my 8 glasses of water a day. Now I only socialy drink coffee and I'm down to one cup a week or less. What I have noticed about the green tea is my teeth are whiter. And others have noticed to. And I used to be a diet soda addict but I've cut back to a soda a day. If anyone is interesed in tracking down a variety of tea log this web page www.alltea.com
