Quick Question About Lower Limits

  • If anyone is around... my daily calorie goal is 1492, and I've only eaten 1022 so far today (had three full meals and a snack, but all were very low-cal, apparently). I also burned about 350 doing an intense workout this morning. I'm really not hungry, but should I have chips/ice cream/something calorie-dense just so I'm not so far under? I know it's not good to be under 1200/day.
  • Going under every once in a while isn't going to cause you problems. If you aren't hungry, there is no need to eat more just to bulk up your calories. The problem comes in when you're consistently eating low calories, not doing so for a day or a few.
  • I was thinking it'll work out fine because Thursday/Friday I have a few business lunches and dinners, which always end up being high cal. So low today will just help me kind of bank a few calories for that. Thanks for confirming!
  • I wouldn't worry about being under one day. It isn't going to hurt anything to be a little under once in a while. If you feel like you should eat something though, I still wouldn't choose junk food. Chances are you wouldn't be getting any nutrients from those foods, just empty calories. Maybe instead you could have some nuts (good fats), yogurt (protein), fruit and a little high fiber cereal for crunch, cottage cheese and fruit (protein and fiber) or some high fiber/protein cereal (like Kashi go lean) with skim milk (more protein).
  • I "average" 1300 calories each week. There are days where I just feel like lots of veggies and lower calorie foods. A couple days I have been around 900-1000 calories. Usually the next day I will make up for it and be at 1400 calories or so. I wouldn't worry as long as you don't do it too often.
  • I dont think that you should make yourself eat if you arent hungry. Especially this late at night. One day under isnt going to hurt you. Especially if you have a few days where you eat a little more.
  • and if you were having a few low-cal days in a row and you felt you needed something calorie dense....still go for nutrition - take the opportunity to squeeze in some nuts or avocado and get those healthy fats that are sooooo hard to get on a low cal diet.
  • I caved and ate the chips BUT! I was good about my portion control, so my total calories for the day (pre-workout) is still just 1234. That's not that bad at all. Assuming the calorie count for exercise on DailyPlate is right, I netted 891 today, with 117g protein, 31g fiber, and 43g fat. It's not the best (especially the fat), but I'm still okay with that.
  • i had the same problem today.. i was really busy and so i didn't get to snack much besides a string cheese, had cereal and milk for breakfast, a grilled chicken wrap and soup for lunch, and homemade steak and soup for dinner.. but still ended up with only 900 calories for the day because i had a lot of low calorie choices in there. i was debating whether to eat somethign else but i wasnt hungry either. i decided to reward myself being under my calories by eating 2 cookies hehe. im still under by 400, and got to have a cookie that i dont normally eat i figure it'll work itself out tommorow when i have a meeting for work which is normally pretty calorie dense.
