Hi All ...my endo diagnosed me with insulin resistance last November...she put me on 2000 mgs of metformin a day ...it was pretty high I guess...she gave me a blood sugar meter and has me check it daily at some point in the day...I have been pretty bad about sticking to my lower carb diet lately and about everynight I get readings in the high 170's or 180's a couple of hours after I eat...I am wondering ( and worried ) if this means I am no longer "pre-diabetic" but have now gone into Diabetes...I go back to her next month but just was just wondering if you all had any imput.
Thanks,
Carri
Those blood sugar numbers are definitely in diabetic range.
You should get a more "accurate/non diabetic" number if you check in the morning before eating anything. The fasting glucose number is what most doctors go by, anyway.
Try to stick with reducing the carbs - it makes a HUGE difference. Not sure what your exercise is either but that can make a big difference as well. It's really hard to make changes - try to stick with it. The health effects of diabetes can be really bad so if you can get it under control now it will be far easier - even though it may seem daunting.
I definitely agree with Shane's comment . . . you really need to check your fasting glucose level when you first get up . . . although it is certainly best if your post prandial (about two hours after eating) numbers are also within normal ranges; so much depends on exactly what you ate and how much of it on any given day. The fasting numbers are a better indication of how you are actually doing.
The best guideline is, of course, your A1C -- but that is not a number you can check yourself. It can only be determined by lab test. It gives a very good picture of how your blood glucose has been over the past 90 days.
Try not to get yourself too upset until you see your doctor and hopefully hear the results of your A1C test (hopefully he will have one done). Stress, unfortunately, will raise your blood sugar levels, too.
Thanks for all of your help ...I am anxious to go to the Dr in Dec ...and I know I need to cut my carbs,,, I eat too many dessert items I know, pure sugar...hope you all have a happy thanksgiving, I will get my butt back into a better diet after that
