Soft food diet for 3 weeks

  • I'm going through some dental drama at the moment. I'm dealing fine, finding lots of yummy foods for my current situation (no biting or chewing on the front teeth) but, as soon as Thanksgiving is over, my molars will have their turn. I won't be able to chew anything for about 3 weeks. In trying to mentally prepare for this, I'm coming up with not many ideas for foods! I've got unsweetened applesauce, homemade fruit smoothies, lowfat cottage cheese, and homemade soups (with tiny, very soft veggies & lentils). Other than that, I'm at a loss for healthy, weight-conscious foods. I'd love some suggestions!
  • Get some sugar free Popsicles, not much food value but they really help with the pain.

For something with nutrition Dannon Light and Fit yogurt many flavors and only 60 calories.Another suggestion sugar free Jello.
  • I can sympathize, I'll be in your shoes soon. Oatmeal is a good choice. You could also try spinach smoothies to make sure you get plenty of nutrition. It's not as bad as it sounds, lol, it's fresh spinach with lots of berries and bananas in a blender, and you can also add milk or yogurt if you wish. You can't taste the spinach.

    There's also Slimfast
  • Ooh, oatmeal! Great idea that I hadn't thought of! Spinach smoothies... Um, I'll keep that in mind and try it if I get brave. I love raw spinach so I might just like it. And, yes to yogurt! Adding that to my list, too. Thanks!

Suzanne, sorry to hear you'll have your own dental drama. Builds character, though, right?
  • I concur with the spinach smoothies, which I have drinking almost every morning for the past 3 weeks. I really enjoy them and I don't like spinach

You can also add pureed vegetables to your soups or try a variety of different soups. Winter squashes are great in soup such as a butternut squash soup. You might want to look at an immersion blender if you don't have one already to help you make smooth soups.

You could also try something like mashed sweet potatoes or mashed winter squash.
  • Protein powder (I use the Whey stuff with no added flavor) goes good in soups and smoothies.
  • Hi all! Soft food doesn't mean a liquid or near-liquid diet! All your dentist means is that if you start mowing down on toffee, or corn-on-the-cob, or tough tough steak, apples, or cheerios, you'll have some discomfort.
Suitable soft foods include: pasta, well cooked, with tomato sauce; Cooked cereals (Cream of Wheat is really good; watch out for the seeds in Red River cereal); soups; mashed potatoes;flaked ham or chicken; canned tuna, untoasted multigrain bread; peanut butter...etc.
A sample day might look like this:
1/2 cup Cream of Wheat with milk and splenda
    1 Banana
    glass of juice
    water of course
Tuna salad sandwich on multigrain bread (avoid the seeds)
well-cooked spinach as a veg (i.e. reheated from frozen -- yummy!)
1/2 cup mashed potatoes, flaked chicken breast (poach a chicken breast, then pull it into really small fine pieces), 1 cup well-cooked broccoli
    yogort or sugar-free pudding.
You'll know what you can or can't eat depending on the amount of discomfort that you have. And it depends on what is being done, but most find this type of diet absolutely fine for their needs...

    Good luck!
  • OH2007 how's your soft diet going? Did you ever try the spinach smoothie? I hope you 're feeling a lot better.
