Question about wine consumption

  • alright, alright, save me the judgement-I know I am being stupid. I looked everywhere for this question before I decided to through myself out there and admit this: I am 2 years out of gastric bypass, not the band, but the full surgery. I was so proud of myslef-I lost 110 lbs and was down to 175. Then......my husband went on deployment. I have twins with special needs, life got a little overwhelming-so let me feel sorry for myself for a minute. Ok, I'm done. So at night I started to have a glass of wine to wind down. Of course I felt the alcohol immediatly-that was the point! By 2 weeks in-it had become 2 glasses. I never got wasted, or worried about being an alcoholic. He was gone about 3 months, and I'de say on an average I had-and are still having about 6 to 8 oz. of wine a night. I have noticed by my clothes I am gaining weight-but I was too chicken to get on the scale till recently. I gained 40 pounds in 3 1/2 months. Is that possible just by drinking wine? My diet haas not changed at all-I still eat all the same things in small quantities-just the wine has changed. I have noticed though that I can swallow any size of thing-for instance-I can swallow huge vitamins-I can guzzle water, I can take a way too big bite and I don't even feel it go down. So, there it is, I have thrown it out there-try not to kill me, I have already started to cut back on the wine-I just find it hard to believe wine caused 40 pounds-could it be something else? Thanks so much ladies(and gentlemen), I know you spend alot of your time answering these posts and I really appreciate it!
  • <gulp> i'm not quite sure what to say here. what's of more concern to me than the wine is the fact that you can eat large bites and not feel it. from this distance [and trust me - it's a FAR distance!!!] i'm wondering if you're getting enough protein. you've posted a weight gain of about 10 pounds a month - 2.5 pounds a week. something other than the wine seems to be going on here.

and i have a drink ONE DRINK just about every night - i truly understand that family related stress thing [alzheimer's mom - mental age about 3]. but what often happens is that drinking also increases food consumption. i've seen it in me - and trust me, i'm not happy about it.

in fact, because i haven't been eating as regulary as i should, the past week or two has given me a real chance to look at what i'm REALLY eating, and i'm not please. not pleased at all.

sooooo, i've been making changes. it's time, i guess, for a long hard look at your food. a REAL look - one that might involve a food diary.

wish i could give you an easier way around this but i'm not sure i can. but bottom line we BOTH have to get a grip on this NOW before it gets worse!
  • I totally agree with Jiffy, unless you are drinking huge glasses of wine, I think your food has been increasing. Although the math isn't perfect with calories, but for that amount of gain in that period of time, you'd need to average about 1200 calories extra every day above your maintenance calories. If your calories on your wine is 500/day then you'd be eating about 700 extra calories.

Perhaps use fitday or some other calorie counting method to see how many calories you are really eating every day?
  • Thank you so much for your responses!! I think I will jump online and start a food log. I try not to eat when I drink because I know that alcohol makes you hungry-so I try to not eat-or have just an orange or banana. The whole swallowing thing though-I have noticed that for a long time-not while I'm drinking-just during the regular day. I have thought about going into my doctor to see if the opening that he made could have somehow stretched or broke(if that doesn't sound too funny.) But, thank you-I really needed the input from the people that have been through the surgery!! Keep the input coming-there might be someone out there that haas experienced this-or might have a different answer.
