PCOS and elevated Liver count.

    Hello everyone..... I am new to this I was diagnosed with PCOS about three years ago.....I took Metformin and watched what I ate loosing forty pounds I was takin' off the Metformin. Well now a year later I found all the weight I had lost, I had a period that was 5 weeks long so my GP put me back on Metformin and did blood work. This time he noticed that my liver count was elevated, this really freaked me out. So I start going back to my endocrinologist 10/31/07, I am hoping he'll have answers for me...until then I was wondering is an elevated liver count common with PCOS? I am the only person I know that has this, all my Dr's have never dealt with this before, so I feel a little lost! Thank goodness I found this site!!!!

    I saw your post and wanted to reply in hopes that it would ease your mind a little. I have been obeese for almost 9 years and I was diagnosed with PCOS a little over 3 years ago. In the past few months I have lost 41 pounds and stopped taking all medications except birth control. My liver count is always elevated. I have bloodwork run twice yearly (always elevated), I have seen two specialists that have done ultrasound and biopsy and all the doctors I have seen seem to have the same oppinion. There is no detectable damage to my liver aside from the stress placed on it from being fat. Cleverly enough, I believe that call it "fatty liver disease" it's not really a disease it is just an effect from being really overweight. I'm not sure if that is your situation but, hopefully you will worry a little less. I am in perfect health but my ALT level is always off.

    I can say the same thing as the above post said. My liver enzymes have always been elevated, my Reproductive Endocrinologist said just what she said above, "fatty liver" and since weight gain is a major symptom of this disease, well a fatty liver goes along with that, esp with all our insulin resistance.

    But be assured, you are not alone and prepare a list of questions to take along with you to your specialist and ask away! PCOS can be a confusing and frustrating time but at least they are learning more and more about it now.

    Oh and if you haven't already, check out soulcysters.com, it is a great place for PCOSers (Cysters) to get info and support. Also check out our monthly threads here too, there is one for PCOSers who are not ttc and one who are, you are welcomed to join them both if you want!

    Hi Farmers Wife,
    I just was just diagnosed with high insulin levels last week. At the same time the doctor showed me that my liver enzymes were elevated as well. She said it was because my insulin was high and she put me on the metformin. Last year when I was trying to diet and exercise nothing was happening. I didn't lose inches or pounds and it freaked me out a bit, to say the least. Finally, I find someone who is able to help me, and hopefully now, with the medication, I can lose some weight. She recommended the Zone diet. She said that the book, A Week in the Zone, explains all about high insulin levels and how eating properly can help. I still need to get to the grocery store and start this diet... Today I'm feeling so bad that I don't even want to go out in public anymore. My family loves me like I am but this weight is making me depressed! Arrrgh! I even weighed myself after taking half a pill for a week and I've gained 6 pounds. Weee... :-( I hope something kicks in soon. Next week the doctor wants me to take one pill a day and then she will increase my dosage to two pills a day. She is doing this because of the side effects of the Met.
    Good luck with the Met. I hope it works for you and I guess we don't have to worry too much about the liver enzymes but I guess it's always good to hear that yourself from your doctor.
