Food Intolerances and Allergies

  • I've had digestive problems since I was younger. It was not until recently (I am in my 20s) that these problems became quite severe: acid reflux, severe indigestion (food feeling like it was not even going into my stomach), heart burn (burning in my stomach as well), and stomach pain that transfers to the lumbar region of my back (which then makes it impossible to stand up) along with other symptoms due to lack of nutrition (fatigue, lack of focus, bloating, diarrhea, etc).

After a trip to the doctor, I realized that these symptoms were due to food intolerances and quickly reduced my diet to three things: yogurt, eggs and bread. While I am able to digest these, if I snack in between meals or eat too much at once (where too much, is actually too little), then I experience severe pains due to digestion problems as well as weight gain.

At one point I reduced my diet to just bread, crackers and soup. I lost around 15 pounds within a few weeks and barely experienced any digestion problems. So I have a feeling that this is what my diet must consist of from now on - since anything else I've tried increases my digestion problems.

Anyone else have these sorts of problems? And how do you deal with them? My doctor said that he's never heard of the stomach pain transfering to the back - however I've had this since I was in high school. Has anyone else heard of this?
  • There are other things that could be causing this and you should continue to ask your doctor untill you figure it out or get a new doctor. You should try eliminating the most common allergens first, things like wheat, eggs, dairy, tomatoes, nuts untill you start to feel better. Once you have eliminated all of these for a few weeks add them back one at a time untill the simptoms return. Then what ever you added back last is likely causing the problem. It may take some time to figure it out, but reducing your diet to soup and bread wont give you the nutrition you need.

I have celiacs and have simmilar symptoms. I cannot eat any grains that contain gluten, and have to be carefull about how much dairy I have.

I hope you find out whats causing it. And yes stomach pain can definately transfer to the back.
  • Check about gluten. That sounds similar to what my dad's side of the family all experienced before I was diagnosed with celiac disease (which is hereditary, and their problems have gone away since going gluten-free). Not saying this is a problem, but it could be!

I basically can eat almost nothing :P I'm allergic to dairy and am a celiac so I can't eat gluten. Also, I'm sensitive to either hormones or the grain fed to animals, so I can't eat eggs or meat unless it's organic. I only eat fish. Since I'm a college student and bound to a meal plan, I really eat the same thing every day because that's my only *safe* food. I've been getting sick a lot recently too so I'm doing a juice fast for a few days to get the allergens out of my system, then reintroducing foods I think might be trigger (specifically soy- every time I've felt sick in the past few weeks has been after eating soy sprouts or soy nuts).

My symptoms from dairy are skin reactions, from gluten it's skin and neuro (and since I've cut out gluten, if I get "glutened" my tummy hurts), and from hormones it's neuro and GI.

But yeah.. you need to figure out what's wrong. Find an allergist and go through the full run of skin and blood tests. However, I know for me, those came back inconclusive. Maybe try introducing a new thing every day. Also, get evaluated for parasites.
  • I have major food intolerances-especially to wheat and dairy. I eat spelt bread. and use rice milk. It's much easier to do the diet nowadays-there are so many alternatives. Paul Newman makes the best wheat-free cookies under the sun. I would go to a nutritionist, perhaps. Mima
  • Food allergies come in all shapes and forms. I have developed an intolerance to greasy foods. But I agree if it's a gluten intolerance you shouldn't have too much trouble digesting fruits and veggies.
  • Look into Candidiasis, as well. It sounds like you have candidiasis or celiacs.

    Good luck!

After they found out from x rays for something else that I had severe inflammation of colon with no advice how to get better except maybe surgery, I found that food allergies could be manin cause. I removed dairy, caffeine, peanut butter, corn, wheat and eggs for a few months then added one thing back at a time to see reactions. I had severe stomache pain, diareha(?) I could eat only white rice, bananas and some butter when ill, Thank goodness things are staightening out but it is sure detrimental to weight loss. This is a heriditary thing also.
Wish I knew how to do all these great emoticons and things everyone has!
