Boderline IR...how long before change in diet works?

  • I was noticing some IR symptoms (uncontrolable hunger and carb cravings, diziness after not eating for a few hours...etc.)and since diabetes runs in my family, I decided to get tested. All my tests came back ok, dr said it was a little high but still normal. But given my weight, dr. advised to lose some weight or diabetes will definately be in my not so distant future.

My diet was horrible and mostly consisted of fast food, sometimes all three meals came from fast food restaurants and I was averaging about 2500+ calories a day and a whole lot of fat. Piriformis Syndrome ended my running career 2 years ago. These two things combined led to a 40 lb weight gain in 2 yrs.

I was reading "Ultrametabolism" and all the stories about inflamation and sugar overload sounded just like me so I decided to go with a whole foods approach....fruit, veggies & whole grains. I also decided to go back to being vegetarian. I was never a big meat eater, so it's not a big deal for me. Also, tried to fit in a 45 min walk 3 or 4 times a week.

The change in diet has been going well. All the fiber in real foods is very filling and I can see myself being able to do this long term. The biggest improvement I've noticed is in my mood. I was very irritable before and am much calmer now. Before, I would feel dizzy 2 hours after my usual fast food binge and would need to stuff myself again to make it stop, After only a month, I no longer feel faint between meals. I snack on some veggies when my tummy growls (it hadn't growled in years because I was always eating).

So here's my question. I've been doing this for a month and have not lost a single pound. I don't expect quick weight loss and I know it took years to get this way so my body isn't going to change overnight. But I would think going from 2500 cals a day to about 1500 would mean I should have lost a pound or two already, even with borderline IR. I get frustrated really easily, especially after many failed diet attempts. So, for those of you who have been able to lose some weight with any form of IR, how long did it take to notice a difference? Did you start losing right away or did it not do anything for months and then suddenly work when your body adjusted? I'd appreciate any feedback, because I need to be able to see some light at the end of the tunnel.
  • Cinnamon
Can't say I know much about Insulin Resistance, Marm....it took me most of your post to figure out what you were talking about!! LOL.....However, I seem to recall that cinnamon has a really great effect on blood sugar and diabetes, and IR...you can add it to lots of your veggie choices, and my SO and I do take a a capsule......and you can tell it is real, 'cuz you burp cinnamon! Might be worth a try.

Congrats on the healthy eating......wish I could do it every day --- scratch that......wish I WOULD do it everyday....do you bake a sweet potato and then mash it with freshly grated ginger, orange zest, cinnamon, some splenda.......and you can add an egg yolk (that is from South Beach) and then bake again? It is amazing!

If you still aren't losing, are you drinking lotza water with lemon?

Wish I could follow my own advice!!!!!
  • Sorry, I know it was a long post.

I guess I could be drinking more water. I seem to be less thirsty now that I've changed my eating habits.
  • No!
No, I didn't think it was a long post at all...just trying to be helpful........I read about cinnamon in Prevention......so it MUST be true! LOL.
  • IR tends to be a big lesson in patience
It sounds like you have made a great start. If you are experiencing less symptoms with a month of changed eating that is awesome. Focus on the way that you feel, continue with the new way of eating and exercising, and I am sure that eventually the weight will fall off. Yes it is frustrating but unfortunately for those of us with IR, our weight loss journeys are never "normal".

I highly suggest that you take your measurements if you haven't already because you may show differences in your measurements even if you haven't seen a change on the scale.

Good Luck and hang in there. You are definately not alone in your frustration.
  • I had Insulin Resistance. I emphasize HAD. I didn't loose much weight if any to stop being IR. The biggest change I made was to exercise, eat more healthy and drink water...LOTS of water (about 100oz a day). I didn't loose much more than 10 pounds in between the day I was diagnosed and the day I wasn't IR anymore. Since you are borderline you are in the perfect position to prevent IR from developing. Just stick to what healthy choices you are making. Don't give up, it took me about two years to stop being IR, but it was well worth it. I feel SOOOOO much better!

I was going to bring up cinnamon as well. The past month I have put on 5 pounds, was having crashes in between meals, cramps reminiscent of before I lost weight and was put on BCP, acne... I was losing my mind! I was about to start making appointments when it hit me- I've been eating sugar and carbs of the bread and pasta variety. It's no wonder I've been feeling terrible!

I've cut the carbs again and am feeling better, but my sugar addiction isn't so easy. I take a teaspoon of cinnamon (500 mgs) with applesauce and it's really helping. I don't have the crashes and the sugar cravings have waned.

Now for those few pounds I put on!

Just keep doing what you are doing and don't forget to exercise. I can usually drop a couple of pounds when I first start, but exercise is really my key for steady losses.
  • Well, I had an unexpected surprise on Sat morning.....my period. My cycle has been all over the place for the past 2 years, usually at least 6 weeks in between. So I wasn' expecting it at all on Saturday, which was exactly 28 days. Not a single pms symptom. No headaches, sleeplessness, crabbiness or major eating binge, which apparently is another nice benefit of my new diet. I must have been retaining a lot of water because today I am down 5 lbs. Yay!!

I did start putting cinnamon in everything. What a yummy way to control blood sugar levels.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I'm more motivated now that I see my changes are working.
