Anyone use TVP? Need low fat recipes...

  • I just bought some TVP online. I need some good low fat recipes that uses tvp. Anybody?
  • Well, kinda need to know what you bought -what's the texture? Can you use it as a meat substitute in pasta sauce or tacos? (like ground beef).
  • TVP Sloppy Joes
Glory is right. Texture is key to the recipe. For this one use the granules. You can also use the chunks if you reconstitute and blend to "meat" texture in a food processor, just reduce the liquid in the recipe accordingly.

    TVP Sloppy Joes

2 small/medium green bell peppers, chopped
    2 medium onions, chopped
    1 1/2c boiling water
    2 1/2c tomato sauce
    1 1/2c TVP
    2T mustard
    2t chili powder
    1/2t salt
    1T soy sauce
    1/2t pepper
    1t brown sugar

    Directions:
In a very large covered frying pan, saute onions and peppers in the water. When mostly cooked, add remaining ingredients and stir well. Cook on medium heat for 20 mins, covered, stirring occasionally. When done serve over toast, english muffins, buns, or rice.

    Serves 6

Per serving: 149 calories (without bun), 1 gram of fat, 21 grams of carbohydrates, 7.5 grams of fiber, and 14.5 grams of protein

You can omit the salt and sugar if you are restricting those. These are really filling and my DH loves them.
  • I like this recipe for taco and burrito filling

    TVP Taco Filling by MELODY

    -2 cups dried TVP granules
    -1.75 cups boiling water
-2 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
    -1 tsp Oregano
    -1/2 tbsp Ground Cumin
    -1/2 tbsp Ground Coriander
    -1 packet Taco Seasoning Mix
-1 large onion (red onion adds nice color)
    -7 cloves garlic
    -1 green pepper
    -1 red pepper
-1/2 cup Chopped tomatoes or salsa
    -1 cup Cilantro
    -Juice of 1 Lime
    -Water as needed
    -Salt/pepper

Bring water to a boil, pour over TVP, mix and set aside. In a large heavy bottomed pan heat oil and spices over medium heat. Add onions, garlic peppers and stir-fry for several minutes. Stir in TVP and tomatoes. Heat through and add tomatoes or salsa, lime, water if needed to keep it from burning. Taste and add salt/pepper if needed. Take off heat and stir in Cilantro.
There will be enough filling for 8 tacos and the filling freezes well.
