What kind of bread do you use for sandwiches?

  • OK, so while I'm sure it's not the most healthy choice on the market, my absolute favorite bread, which just so happens to be a lower cal bread, is Wonder Light Italian. Running a close second is Wonder Light Sourdough. Both are awesome and only one point for two slices (ww).

    Here's the problemo.....for the last 2-3 weeks I haven't been able to get any at the bread store. I decided to buck up and pay retail $2.89!!!!! at the regular supermarket, but they didn't have any either. Hmmmmm!! Today I stopped at the bread store and finally asked when they were going to get more in, and they said both kinds are being discontinued! How could they?! So now I'm on the hunt for bread. I don't eat much of it, so when I do I want it to be good and tasty, and I really prefer bread that is super soft, like brand new loaf fresh soft. Most of the lighter breads that I tried last year weren't like that, they were sort of, um, maybe dense? Kinda felt like the same as if they were going stale when it was a brand new loaf. Doesn't make for a pleasant sandwich! While it hasn't been an issue these last couple weeks, come August 14th school starts and I'm back to taking my lunch every day. Those 2 point sandwiches (1 point for bread, one point for deli meat) paired up with carrots and a yogurt made a great, filling lunch that was easy on the points for the day.

    Help me, please! Any bread suggestions out there?
  • I recently began using this bread (pictured below). I have found that is the MOST natural and wheaty bread I have ever had----so healthy!!! it is made utterly of natural ingredients, I even checked the label!

  • I like the Western Bagel Alternative line. My favorite is The Alternative Pita. Only 110 calories, but 8 grams of fiber, and no trans fats. And totally tasty like white bread. They also make an Alternative Bagel (110 cal, 7g fiber), and Alternative english muffin (100 cal, 4g fiber). They don't taste at all like low cal food. Love 'em!
  • I just use plain old wheat bread. I used to be a big fan of potato bread, but haven't found any low cal options for it.
  • I use the Sara Lee Delighful breads. They have white, wheat, multigrain, etc. It comes in at 45 calories a slice, considerably less than regular bread.
  • Nature's Own Wheat Double Fiber bread - 40 calories per slice with 5 grams of fiber per slice. For a low calorie bread, they are thick and soft. It's hands down, my favorite.
  • I use Nature's Own Double Fiber bread. It's 40 calories a slice with 5 grams of fiber. It taste terrific if you like wheat bread.
  • Nature's Own definitely! The calories range, depending on which variety you buy, but I try to get the sugar-free/high-fiber variety. Tastes good and has reasonable calorie/fat. I don't eat bread a lot but when I do this is great.
  • Oh my gosh, thanks for all the suggestions! I've made a list of those suggestions and will take it with me to the grocery store within the next couple days to give them a try! You guys are awesome!
  • I use Nature's Own Whole Wheat, which I used before I ever started counting calories because I like it! Not the light kind, just the regular.
  • I use Orowheat Light Whole Wheat. I wouldn't exactly call it pillowy, but it's pretty decent for what it is (1 point for 2 slices). Sometimes I just get Oatnut, though (my fav but lotsa calories).

    I love the Ezekiel breads though... Trader Joe's just came out with a knockoff, too.
  • I always use wraps now. Usually the Buena Vista Low Carb Wheat wraps (can be purchased at WalMart) or Trader Joe's. It's very rare that we purchase bread anymore.

  • I look for whole grain breads that contain 50-60 calories per slice. One of my favorites is "The Baker" and I recently bought a sprouted bread "Alvarado Street" or something like that. I just read the ingredients and make sure they are decent and also make sure there is plenty of fiber per slice as well.
  • I second the ezekiel bread. That is what I use when I am not busy making my own home made whole wheat bread from fresh ground wheat flour from my grain mill. They have many variety's to chose from.
