PMS/PMD out of control eating

  • I had a consult with the doctor heading our local hospital weight management clinic. They have a great program, but it doesn't look like my insurance is going to cover it, and there's no way to pay for it without insurance.

I met this doctor when she was taking her turn in the walk-in clinic when I was having an asthma/bronchitis attack. She suggested I try a reduced carb/whole grain diet (ala South Beach) and told me about the weight management clinic.

The South Beach style eating really seemed to help with hunger and things were going really well, and I was losing weight again at a decent pace, and then (as usual) for about a week starting 3 days before my period, I ate and ate and ate (at first "legal" foods, and then even that fell apart).

The doctor heading the clinic, suggested stacking birth control to shorten or miss periods (either missing the placebo week with traditional bc packs or using yasmin or others that do the stacking for your). She said progesterone levels seems to often be the cause of monthly cravings and binging, and if I can keep my hormone levels constant, I may be able to avoid the binge week altogheter.

Has anyone had success with this? Any side effects or problems?
  • I have the same problem with cravings before a period. I have also been told I have PMDD. Im not sure what to think about it. Drs say alot be really who knows. I have been diagnosed with bunches of things and no matter what med I take or what I do I always feel the same.

I did however hear that birth control helps with hormone levels. However as with every other med out there...There are side effects.

    Quote:
    Who shouldn’t take YAZ?

YAZ® contains a different kind of hormone, drsp®, which may increase potassium. Therefore, you should not take YAZ if you have kidney, liver, or adrenal disease because this could cause serious heart and health problems. Tell your doctor if you are on daily long-term treatment for a chronic condition such as cardiovascular disease or chronic inflammatory disease. Women who take certain drugs (see safety information) should have their potassium level checked in the first month of taking YAZ.
    Important safety information about YAZ:
What are the risks involved with taking any oral contraceptive (OC)?

OCs can be associated with increased risks of several serious side effects. OCs do not protect against HIV infection or other STDs. Women, especially those 35 and over, are strongly advised not to smoke because it increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects including blood clots, stroke, and heart attack.
  • Count me in! I experience PMS two weeks before my period starts and my eating gets completely out of control. I've just recently started following a 2000 calorie diabetic foodplan and am terrified as to what will happen when its PMS time.
  • Hi folks. I have always had major PMDD issues, and it has stalled my weight loss efforts many times in the past untilI discovered how to fight it. You might benefit from my experience. I have Endometriosis as well as PMDD and after many years of reading I tried Progesterone cream. It is a natural product and safer than the oral Progestins in the birth control pill, and it has no adverse side effects. I use it twice a day from Day 10 of my cycle. It has stopped the majority of my symptoms and although I still have the desire to eat more just before my period it has definitely helped and made a difference with how badly I fall off the wagon. I feel like I have control most of the time now, and i have less anger/depression issues with my period too. I recommend this book: Hormone Balance Made Simple by Dr John Lee.
