Question about Fruit Smoothies-new to FS

  • Hi,
I'm on day one and had a question about the smoothies. I bought several bags of frozen fruit today and tried strawberries with a banana and yogurt and a bit of milk. It tasted horrible. Then my daughter tried the same with the frozen peaches and it didn't taste like much of anything. Should we be using fresh fruit instead of frozen? I think frozen fruit just doesn't taste that great. Any opinions would be appreciated!
  • Was your banana really ripe? Also, what kind of yogurt are you using? If it's nonfat plain unflavored yogurt, that may also be while your smoothie doesn't taste so great. I think vanilla-flavored yogurt makes the best smoothie. You might also try adding a little fresh-squeezed orange juice to it too.

Fresh fruit is usually always tastier than frozen, but not always possible depending on the season and I don't see why you couldn't use frozen fruit instead. However, the quality of frozen fruit does vary a lot, in my opinion. I prefer to get name-brand frozen fruit from good stores, but try different brands to find one you like. Peaches especially seem to vary in quality. I really like the frozen fruit from Trader Joe's.
  • I prefer to not use the yogurt in my smoothies, but that's just my preference. I've found that fresh fruit is always tastier than frozen, except for frozen cherries. They're great - especially if you add a tiny bit of flavoring (I especially like rum, but vanilla or another works well too!). Also, you can add a little bit of Splenda.
  • Hello.. my favorite smoothie is 1 cup of sugar free frozen fruit..1 cup water..1/2 tsp crystal lite lemonaide..blend till smooth.. add 2 tbls of nondairy whipped topping of your choice like cool whip free..my favorite is with peaches..if its not sweet enuff add a little splenda..on weight watchers its 2 pts.. rosey
  • I make all my smoothies with frozen fruit and I think they taste great. I use nonfat vanilla yogurt and I will add some splenda and sometimes vanilla extract with a bit of milk. My favorite is frozen blueberries. Another option is to buy fresh fruit and then freeze it yourself. I just hate to add ice cubes to my smoothies, they water it down and I hate the chunks of ice that it leaves.

BTW crystal lite is not allowed in phase 1, but I think it is allowed for EFS.
  • I made a yummy smoothie last night. I used Dole frozen strawberries (come in a huge bag at Sam's; partially thawed them in the mocrowave because my blender won;t chop them up well if they are frozen completely), about 1/4 c canned crused pineapple w/ a little extra juice from the can (only canned fruit I have used), half of a 6-oz a container of Dannon Light n Fit vanilla yogurt), a splash of water, and a packet of Splenda. Yummy!!! I also like it w/ banana and using the peach yogurt. I'm not a yogurt eater, and this is about the only way I can eat it.
  • If you have a Jamba Juice near you, all of the "englightened" and "all fruit" smoothies are less than 200 calories for the 16 oz size, even with a fiber or protein boost. They are wonderful!
  • This is how I make my breakfast smoothies and they are so good!

4 oz. Activia Light yogurt (any flavor)
4 oz. Skim or 1% milk
    1 banana
    1/2 cup oats
1 cup (give or take depending on preference) frozen fruit of any sort

I blend it all together and it is so yummy.
I use Activia yogurt because it has really helped my digestive system, but you can use whatever low-fat yogurt you want.
