Canned Soup.... What's the best?????

  • I have been trying to follow the ww program and points. What is a good canned soup low in points besides the old vegetable and chicken noodle. I do not like the clam chowder..
I have seen the progresso brand but have not tried it yet.

    thanks,
    Shelley
  • Most canned soups are high in sodium. Other than that I'm not much of a soup eater unless it is homemade. There are some recipes in our recipe section.
  • These are some I like:

    • Some of my favorites are-
Progresso Beef Barley (99%) fat free
      Progresso Low Fat Minestrone
Progresson Hearty Tomato-great with a "grilled cheese" sandwich
      Healthy choice chicken noodle
      Healthy choice clam chowder
I like to create more volume by adding in extra vegetables-
for instance, I like to take Progresso Beef Barley,(4 pts/can), add a can of diced drained tomatoes(0 points)1 can mixed vegetables drained (1 point), maybe a small can of lima beans or butter beans drained (2 points). This makes a very filling and substantial lunch or dinner for not too many points.
Recently, I took the Healthy choice clam chowder and added in a small can of sliced mushrooms. The Healthy Choice Hearty chicken is good also.
I have heard that Nature Valley Pasta Fagioli is very good, however I haven't tried it yet (2 pts per can)
I know soup is high in sodium, but I make sure to drink extra water, usually an extra 32 ozs each day, so that helps.
      Good luck!
    • I really like the Healthy Valley canned soups and they have several low fat options. They may be a bit pricier than some of the others, but I haven't really compared them, so I'm not sure. It's an organic brand, so you can find it in the organic section of your grocers or at places like Whole Foods. I think they taste the best.
    • Low point soup
I like Campell's Chicken Gumbo for 2.5 points for the whole can. For this soup, I follow the directions and add a can of water when I'm cooking it, so it fills you up rather nicely.

I know you asked for canned soups, but I really like the Lipton cup-o-soups also. The hearty chicken noodle is 1 point per pack and usually 2 packs fills me up.

      Hope that helps.
    • Thanks for all your suggestions regarding soups. I am looking forward to trying them all!!!!
About 10 years ago I lost 100 pounds in a year by just eating soup canned, salad, boiled eggs , and dry toast and fruit. Granted I was on a diet pill prescription too and went to the doctor every two weeks. I would not do it over again with all the problems these days with diet pills. But I thought about trying different soups for lunch . Maybe that would help me.

      Thanks,
      Shelley
    • My new favorite canned soup is the Healthy Choice ones. They have 1/2 the sodium of Progresso - and they used to be my favorites! The Chicken and Rice and Chicken noodle are GREAT!!

      Tara
    • I love the Progresso split pea w/ham - it's really good and not very "pricey" - I think it's either 2 or 3 points for a serving, 2 servings to a can - so you can have a whole can for the same "price" as a frozen dinner.

Also Campbells makes these little prepackaged containers that are 3 points apiece and are great to take in a lunch. I've seen beef vegetable, chicken noodle, and something else, I forget what.

Healthy Choice soups are ok too, although a bit bland. I add a little salt to them (I know, I know, they're already high in sodium, but it doesn't seem to bother me and I like the taste better with more salt. )
    • Trader Joes has some good soups.
If you like Split Pea you are in for a treat. About 1-2 pts per serving. I eat the whole can and it is so thick you could use a fork. Extremely filling!!!
