Plateau

  • So, I have hit a Plateau... This happened a couple of weeks ago and then I upped my calories and lost 2 pounds in a week. Now, it feels as if I have hit a wall again... I am doing well on my plan, but I'm scared I am going to slip away because I'm not seeing results. I'm actually exercising more than I did before but the scale isn't moving. Which it just clicked in my head as I was typing this that the extra exercise could be why the scale isn't moving, maybe I should start taking my measurements instead. Even if that is the case, I can't stay at 161 forever.... will I ever be in the 150's??? Does anyone have any tips or advice?
  • How long have you been at 161? Two weeks isn't a plateau. It's likely that as you are getting closer to your goal, the weight is coming off more slowly.
  • Are you measuring? maybe you're losing inches instead.

Oops.. just re-read, haha... yes, take measurements!!
  • Sometimes when I slow down I look back at my fitday for a good week and see if there is anything I am differently. Are my calories come from different types of food? Am I eating more fat or carbs? Am I meeting my nutritional requirements?

You could be right, maybe I just need to be more patient. I guess I just got use to losing at least a pound a week... I don't like not seeing the scale move though, that is what keeps me motivated ....

I took my measurements tonight, but how often should I check them?? once a week... once month? I'm not used to taking measurements

This is deffinitely a good idea, but I haven't been keeping up with my daily plate. Once school stopped, I've been trying to get into a different routine, so this also could have something to do with it.

Thanks for all of the advice you guys, keep it coming! You guys keep me motivated for sure!
  • I would take them once or twice a month for firm results
  • Yes, it slows down, it can be so disheartening at times. ^^; I too was getting used to 1-2 lbs a week, and now I lost like, uh, 0.5 lbs in two weeks. But I do my best to convince myself that not seeing the scale budge is also a victory in itself (hey, it could go UP, right!). It's hard, but... it takes what it takes.

Anyway, the calories-tracking and measurements suggestions seem a good start to me.
  • I know its hard to keep your motivation but don't give up! You have worked to hard. Your body is going through a lot of changes; it will eventually catch up and the weight will continue to decrease. Just stick with it. Your not alone. I just got past a plateau as well. I was getting discouraged too, but I stuck with it.

Another thought, not trying to be too personal but some women retain water during PMS and during their period. I know I do. Just a thought.

This could definitely be a factor that I haven't thought about. I just got past my TOM.. this is something to think about. And that wasn't too personal lilchixa ... You guys are making me feel better, and I haven't let it discourage me, I've just been working that much harder... this just shows how much my frame of mind has changed, I would have already gave up several months ago. I contribute a lot of that to this website and you girls... it has really been helpful... especially in times when I'm feeling discouraged..
  • I have been a diet for most of my life, but I have found that two good ways of pushing through a plateau are changing (not increasing/decreasing) your type of exercise. The other is that once you have lost some weight, you do have to decrease your calorie intake. The eating plan that got you to where you are won't get you to where you want to be (i think they said that in weight watchers or one of those other diets i've tried...). Just food for thought

    Good luck!
  • Gaining muscle and losing inches can also make you seem like you are at a plateau, try on a pair of jeans and feel the difference.

Like others have said, change your fitness around and it will kick start a new you.
  • My parents are getting a new pool on Tuesday, so this will change my exercise for the summer. Maybe it will help! I'm very excited about it
  • Ohhh that does sound exciting! Our gym has one, but I'd rather not be in a swimsuit around skinny women.. haha.
