What's the deal with sodium?

  • So... I know you're not supposed to have much sodium in a day (~2400 mg, is that right?). I know that too much sodium can lead to increased blood pressure. But WHAT ELSE? What are the health risks associated with too much sodium?

I'm just wondering because my blood pressure is very good (112/65) and if there aren't other health risks associated with too much sodium intake, I don't want to stress over how much I get in a day - I have a hard enough time watching my good carbs and fats and portions!

    Any input is greatly appreciated!
  • Hi,
It kinda works like this, water follows salt, so the more salt you have in your body the more water you have. Sodium increases blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure it can cause problems with your heart and kidneys. The higher the blood pressure the more your heart works. The kidneys are the filtering system in the body and they help clean your blood, so they can be overworked as well. In the end you should watch how much sodium you take in every day. Everything in moderation.
  • But... if your blood pressure's fine, there's nothing to worry about?
  • You should still watch. Fine now could be high when you are older because of the sodium you consume now.
