White hominy has more calories than yellow?

  • Why?

It appears that white hominy has more calories per 1/2 cup than yellow.

Would anyone have any idea why this is? Not that it really matters, but I just noticed that today and was a little confused about it.
  • Nah huh...Dedicated Hominy fan that I am, I have in front of me a can of both...the brand is "The Allens". White hominy has 110 per half cup, and the golden has 120......but here is a real difference, and I am not happy. There are 380 mg. of sodium in the golden, and 570 in a half cup of white! Why do they have to put so much !#$!%@$$%#$^% sodium in such a healthy food???

I'm seeing different. Maybe it just differs from certain brands. Even calorie king has white hominy listed as higher in calorie than yellow. I looked at other websites as well and I'm still seeing white higher in calories than yellow.

Well, technically, there are healthier foods than hominy. It's really not all that great nutritionally. Except for a little bit of fiber and zinc, it really doesn't have that many vitamins or anything. I simply eat it because I like it.

However, you can rinse the hominy to remove SOME of the sodium content.
  • Different varieties of corn have different calories - the same with all food really. Hominy is not that great a food for us to consume often.

    Everything in moderation

We could definitely be consuming worse. But like I said above, hominy really isn't all that nutritional.
  • I love hominy, but really removed it as a diet staple, when I realized it was no better than corn, which some describe as only worthy as livestock feed and having no place in a weight loss diet. I'm sure that's extreme, but I decided that since I like black-eyed peas so much -- and they're great for you -- that I could live without hominy without crying.

Well, yes, I would say that's a little extreme. Corn has many health benefits.

I'm not a big corn eater, but I do like it once in a while, especially the fresh corn on the cob from my local farmers market.

So delicious! I eat it all summer long.
