Non-nut snacks?

  • I am starting SB tomorrow. I have done it twice before and lost weight both times, and got pregnant within the first month both times too! Let's hope not again...

    Anyway, I developed a peanut allergy about a year ago, but was still able to eat other nuts (almonds, pistachios), but this past weekend I had a reaction to almonds, so now I am not eating ANY nuts any more.

    Am I relegated to nothing but cheese sticks for protein snacks? I'm trying to think of a way to incorporate beans into snacks. All I've come up with is hummus and veggies? Any other ideas?

    I want to be as prepared as possible by tomorrow morning! Thanks in advance.
  • how about low fat cottage cheese? Or plain yogurt? I just started so I don't have too many ideas.

    I'm not sure about any bean snacks...
  • How about laughing cow cream cheese wedges wrapped in lettuce? Or a boiled egg? Celery sticks filled with cottage cheese? There are many possibilities. I think there are several nice recipes under the recipe section's phase 1's snacks.
  • I love the lite laughing cow cheese spread on a stalk of celery. I also eat hummus on celery. My afternoon snack is a smoothie made with skim milk, silken tofu and sugar-free syrup. Sometimes, hubby will make a pot of the shrimp soup or the chicken and white bean chili and we will have a cup of that for our snack.
  • Thanks so much for the ideas (and if anyone else has more, keep em coming )... I am going late-night grocery shopping tonight and want to be armed with a full week's list and not run out of things by mid-week.
  • we do a lot of what the others suggested...string cheese and boiled eggs, hummus with veggies to dip, celery with Laughing Cow

  • hi well my fav snack of chick peas is as follows:
    1 can chick peas open and wash thoroughly with water
    i tbs fat free yogurt
    half teaspoon of mint
    half teaspoon coriander
    one green chilli or jalapeno pepper
    salt (according to ur taste)
    ok put 2 tbs of water and all the other ingredients except chick peas in a blender and blend well until a paste is formed mix it with chick peas and enjoy if u like spicy food u can add little black pepper as well and u can use the paste as salad dressing too

    I find bean salads an easy and yummy snack. I make up a big batch at the beginning of the week and then just scoop up a serving into a container to take with me to work or school or whatever. My favorite is 3 bean salad--I think it's the ultimate SBD food! Just make it at home or you get tons of sugar! I also make the broccoli/bacon/cheese salad that's in the recipe forum.

    What about a veggie burger, sans bun, with some cheese? I LOVE Morningstar's Tomato Basil Pizza Burger...it's to die for! Whenever I made it at work, everyone would wander in the office and say, "What is that????"

    My personal 'comfort food' is half a can of refried beans with a little salt and garlic powder, heated up, then topped with 1/4 cup of red. fat cheese and SF salsa. You get some veggies from the salsa but it's warm and cheesy and creamy and just seems like comfort food to me.

    Glad you're thinking about protein...it's SO important!

    BTW, what about soy nuts? They aren't actually nuts...they're beans, but they're roasted like nuts. Yummy! Also, you might look for 'wheatnuts,' I seem to remember that they're Phase 2+3 safe. They're crunchy things made from wheat that are supposed to resemble nuts. You can find them in the nut aisle (snacks, etc.). I had them once and liked them.
  • My standard afternoon snack is steamed edamame with a sprinkling of salt. I like them slightly on the firm side. They're a great stand-in for nuts as far as snackability goes. Mouth-feel is probably more like boiled peanuts than roasted though (I've never had boiled peanuts so I'm guessing here).
  • Thanks for the ideas. I roasted some chickpeas and munched on them today, mmmm. DH even tried to steal them. I will check into soynuts. I used to eat them in high school. I will have to check the label to be sure they aren't processed in a plant with other nuts. Darn nuts. Sneak into everything!

  • Sabbykay, look in the Phase 1 Salads in the recipe forum to find several great recipes for Bean Salads.
  • I'm allergic to milk and have recently developed what seems to be a sensitivity to nuts, so I feel your pain.

    I normally eat little wraplets of turkey spread with a little hummus and spinach leaves inside. Sometimes I just eat a little bit of whatever is left over from my dinner before since I plan on making extra.
  • I'm also nursing so I have to go easy on beans or my baby cries ... I can eat a little bit but more than a few bites and it affects her. So, no nuts, little beans... it makes things difficult. But worthwhile to be healthier!
