New here and have some questions

  • Hello everyone I was surprised to see a PCOS section on this forum but I'm glad it's here. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 8 years ago and never gave it much thought until recently. I'm 22 now and I do gain weight easily and have trouble taking it off and also have trouble with acne despite being on birth control for 8 years. Lately I have been succeeding at losing weight but I feel this is mostly due to go to the gym 5 days a week.

So some questions for you all..
In the last 1-2 years I've been having a lot of symptoms of someone who is diabetic. Specifically I am often dehydrated, and have to urinate every 1-2 hours, I also have occasional mildy blurry vision. I was tested for diabetes but came out negative, still I wonder if these symptoms may be related to the PCOS and if losing weight would help the symptoms? Also are there specialists you can go to for PCOS? I feel my doctor has limited knowledge on this subject and would like to either get a new doctor or talk to someone with more experience. Is there any sort of medication for PCOS besides birth control that may help some of these symptoms that anyone has taken?

I'm also generally confused about what insulin resistance is.

    Thanks for any help!
  • Dear fireflytrance, I don't have PCOS, but two years ago I learned that my thyroid had stopped working. I too had trouble losing weight (in fact was gaining it, when I used to be able to lose), I was easily chilled, and my thinking was fuzzy and not what it normally was. But the symptom that really caught my attention was my own overwhelming thirst. I went to my doctor, got blood work done--and he called me personally (which he had never done before) to inform me about my thyroid no longer functioning.

I don't know if your thyroid is involved or not. But I still recommend that you see your doctor and get blood work to check your thyroid (unless you've already done that, in which case, forgive me for stating the obvious!). I test negatively for diabetes, but still have to make sure I'm well-hydrated, even though my thyroid is under control for two years now. If you ever find out something else, PM me to let me know what it is. Thanks.

Good for you for taking care of your health. Sincerely,

  • Thanks for the reply My doctor did recommend I get blood work done as well which I haven't done yet since I've been so busy with midterms (and don't like getting blood work done) but I guess I should probably make it a priority.

    Thanks for your advice!
