freezing cooked oatmeal ?



  • I have a crockpot recipe for oatmeal that I enjoy, but it makes at least 5 servings. Do you think I can freeze it? If I want to eat it everyday for breakfast I feel it is fine for four days in the fridge, but longer than that and I start to wonder/worry. So am I stuck with the same breakfast for five days in a row or can I freeze a portion or two for next week?

  • Cooked oatmeal freezes very well, amasam! I like to make a large pot of steel-cut oats or regular oatmeal and freeze it in individual servings. I pop one in the microwave for about 2 1/2 minutes for a fast hot breakfast.
  • What a great idea! Thank you. One question for you Ally...will you share your recipe? I eat steel cut oatmeal, but I want to start cooking it in a crock pot. Also, what size crockpot do you use? I packed away my crockpot(to clear clutter and, hopefully, sell this house!) and I bought a small 2 quart one just for my oatmeal...but, I really need some clear direction on how to use a crock pot for the oatmeal.
  • The recipe in the book is:
    2 cups rolled oats
    1/2 cup dry Grape Nuts
    1/2 cup slivered almonds
    1/4 cup chopped dates
    4 cups water

    1. Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker.
    2. Cook on low for 4 - 6 hours.
    3. Serve with fat free milk.

    What do I do?
    I use half rolled oats and half steel cut.

    I use a tablesoppon or two of splenda in the whole batch to sweeten, and a bit of SF syrup indivdualy if I want it sweeter.

    I add a few shakes of cinnamon and nutmeg and cloves - for flavor.

    I use a Christmas light timer on my crock pot (sorry not sure of its size, large oval is the best description I have!) to be done when I get up - about 5 hous is more than enough.

    I made the first and last batch with the dates - not ideal for SB, but I like them, they add sweetness, it is only a few, and I am maintaining.

    Variations I have tried:
    I used Fiber One instead of Grape Nuts, as that is what I had!

    Add in 3 tbls of ground flax seed (for the Omega 3's).

    Instead of dates and almonds I have tried:
    half can pumpkin w/ 1/2 cup pecans
    2 mashed bananas w/ 1/2 cup walnuts

    I am thinking I may use the rest of the pumpkin and some frozen cranberriees (not sweetened) on the next batch - very Thanksgivingy .
