question about water weight

  • Hi everyone, I've been lurking for awhile and decided to join. I've been doing the SB diet p1 7 days so far, and it's going great.

I lost 5 lbs so far, but a lot of people tell me it's just water weight. Is water weight something you can gain back easily when you re-introduce carbs?
  • HMMM??? Good question. I don't know the answer, but I'd like to.. I hope some one can enlighten us..
  • Water weight isn't permanent (or even semi-permanent) weight loss. We can gain or lose several pounds in water weight on a daily basis.

Ultimately what it comes down to is taking in fewer calories than you burn, a 3500 calorie deficit for every pound lost. South Beach is a good plan to do this.
  • so glad you decided to join us. Please don't let anyone tell you that what you lost is just water weight. Sometimes, eating healthier can result in a reduction in excess water...but, that is only if you have excess water to lose in the first place! How are you clothes fitting? I lost two inches off my waist the first 10 days.

MariaMaria, please remember that not everyone loses by creating only a deficit in calories. I am insulin resistant and have tried many diet and exercise plans with no success. Many here at 3FC have a very hard time believing this as it goes against everything the dieting world and conventional medicine tells us. However, medical science is slowly learning the truth about some of the metabolic disorders and their impact on our health and our weight. Some of the diets I attempted are very well know diets that many here on 3FC have used with great success. Southbeach is the first diet in a long time that has been successful for me. For most people, dieting is a matter of eating less calories than they consume. However, there are many of us here at 3FC for which that formula just doesnt work with our body.
  • Thanks for your responses.

Girlygirl, I did lose 1/2" on my waist and hips, so there is a start. could this still be from the water weight though? I don't really care what kind of weight I'm losing, as long as it doesn't come back.

Prior to this I was doing a regular lowfat diet, and the pounds barely came off. I lost maybe 2-3 pounds after doing it for a month, and now I've already lost 5 lbs on SB so it's pretty amazing. hopefully I will continue to lose, since I haven't lost any in 3 days. at least I didn't gain, which is good considering it was the weekend.

I'm still curious about the carb thing. is it common to gain some back after they are re-introduced? I will do it very slowly to be careful!
  • OK...I have been on SBD since March 23 and I haven't gained an ounce back. I have lost 21.5 pounds since starting and no weeks have showed a gain. Water weight maybe, but it's gone for good now

Rhonda is so right. I am insulin resistent too and am taking medicine to help combat this. My meds and SBD are doing the trick!
  • hi i started the sme time you did and im wondering why i havent lost as much?
    i have lost 15 lbs.
  • Probably because I weigh more than you. The more you weigh the faster you lose I can't wait to weigh 173!
