PCOS and keeping off the weight

  • This may have been answered in other places but I thought I'd ask anyway... is there a recommended way off keeping weight off with PCOS after I've reached my goal weight?
I was diagnosed at 18, weighing about 13 stone, but my doctor said that I had caused the PCOS by being overweight. I've heard differing theories over the years so I've never really looked into it. I just assumed that it was my fault.
I'm lucky in that I only have the problems with the regularity of periods and the weight - not any of the other problems that people have.
Is there a consensus now about what we should be eating to stay healthy, and does the PCOS have an affect on how we process food? I'm on a food-replacement diet at the moment and I'm losing loads of weight, but I'm worried about what happens when I start eating again.
    Any advice would be welcome!

    Thanks Emma
  • Being overweight doesn'y cause pcos - there are plent of skinny cysters too.

You will probably need to find out ehat works best for you as far as eating. I know for myself a huge trigger is white carbs and sugar. But, I think that varies, so you will probably have to log your food for awhile and tweak it to fit your needs.
  • Definitely continue doing what you did to lose the weight to also maintain the weight loss. Exercise, eat fairly healthy, don't overdo it, etc.

She's on a meal replacement diet right now, so I don't think she can continue that.

Oh duh! I would hope that the program she is on has a maintenance plan. A maintenance plan is really the crucial part of any weight loss plan. I'd definitely look at programs such as South Beach Diet and/or counting calories. I agree if you stay away from the added sugars and processed foods, it helps a lot.
  • It does have a management phase which slowly reintroduces food. I was just trying to work out whether I should be looking at low GI foods or at reducing carbs in general as some people seem to think this is a particular problem for people with PCOS.
    Thanks
  • Low GI would probably be your best bet. From my experience, the MOMENET I start low GI my symptoms start to disappear (I've been on my diet two weeks and already have that monthly friend back. Damn it!) I would assume that low GI would work best.
  • Thanks Renny Sue. I'm going to start planning now
