whole wheat phyllo dough - anybody tried this?

  • I love phyllo dough but I have pretty much stopped eating it, because I thought it was too high in fat and calories. I read an interesting blurb online today:

"Flaky phyllo dough has a rep for being high in fat -- probably because it's used to make decadent dishes such as spanakopita and baklava. But the fat actually comes from melted butter that's brushed onto the dough. Use a butter-flavored cooking spray such as Pam instead, and you'll get a buttery, golden-brown crust without the fat and calories."

That is intriguing! I can think of lots of yummy things I could make with phyllo dough (a low fat/low calorie spanakopita for example). I saw a whole wheat phyllo dough at Whole Foods once, just wondered if anybody has tried cooking something healthy with it! Recipes welcome!
  • No, but I did make baked empanadas using won ton wrappers--that sure saved a lot of calories. Too bad they weren't whole wheat though.
