Scales going up and down?

  • I am new to dieting although I have always eaten healthily , just a lot too much of it!!

Well, I have bought some scales just so I can moniter my progress and I am amazed at how wildly my weight varies from one day to the next, even from morning to night.Yes, yes, I know I shouldn't be getting on the scales every day! but is that right to vary 3 lbs in one day? How can I accurately tell how much I've lost - except to say the lower weight is slowly reducing?

Any thoughts on this please? Should I be hiding my scales?
  • Don't hide them. Your weight will fluctulate a lot from morning to night.

I weigh once a week, every Thursday first thing buck naked.
  • I go up up to 5lb between day and night! I weigh myself right before I eat breakfast and take that weight.
  • Thanks for the replys! Wow, 5 lbs in one day!

I will try to only weigh myself once a week and first thing in the morning.
  • It depends on how much you drink. If you are not drinking enough the scale will go up. also sodium is big culprit it cause water fetention i willnot weight myself for a couple days after eating a meal that is high in sodium cause then the scales are not so nice. And don't forget dear old TOM.
  • Thanks - yes, I was suprised to see my weight go up at the time of my period and thanks for the info about water. I tend to drink a lot of water anyway but if I have retained water it really shows on the scales.
  • What drives me mad is my doctors scales! I can weigh myself at home and be say 11 stone 4 (my starting weight) and on theirs I am half a stone heavier I think they do it on purpose so they can tell you to lose weight!!!
