Anyone know of a good instant oatmeal?

  • I was wondering if anyone knew of a good brand of instant oatmeal that fits Sonoma guidelines? I tried Kashi puffed wheat cereal and milk for breakfast one day, but it didn't seem to hold me until lunch, even with a snack. I love eggs, but not every morning!
  • Have you tried just regular Old-Fashioned oats? You can make them in the microwave in 2-3 minutes and they're soooo much better than instant. I use 1/3 cup oats, 2/3 cup water (or 1/2 c oats, 1 cup water), a little salt, and nuke for 2-3 minutes. Then I add a few raisins and crushed walnuts, and a little skim milk. A great treat for breakfast.

There are a number of threads about oatmeal in lots of forums, you could do a search.
  • Yeah, I'm a sucker for old fashion oats. I add hot water and let them sit for maybe a minute. They're chewer than the instant style but I like them that way. If you like them softer, zap them in the microwave for a minute.

    I add fresh blueberries. Yummmm.
  • Thanks WaterRat and Goddess. Will definately give the old fashioned oats a go!
  • Have you tried Bare Naked oatmeal? The walnut/banana is very good. I use skim milk instead of water and also add 1/2 scoop of vanilla protein powder from GNC (their brand). Oatmeal never stuck w/me before I started adding the protein powder. 90 seconds in the microwave and it's done. Very tasty!

  • Make your own!
I bought some instant oats, protein powder, slivered almonds and dried blueberries. I added a little raw sugar, cinnamon..and of course the almonds and the blueberries, and had yummy low sugar oatmeal! (Basically i did 2 cups of oatmeal, 2 handfuls of blueberries and almonds, 2 scoop of protein powder and 4 spoons of sugar!)

    Try it out!
  • I can't remember the Sonoma guidelines, and I loaned my book to someone. But there are two kinds of instant oatmeal that might work. McCann's makes an instant oatmeal that contains Splenda, and it has 100 calories per package. McDougall makes an organic instant oatmeal with half the usual sugar, which contains 150 cal per package. Both are available on Amazon in their grocery section.
  • I don't remember the brand, but I found an instant oatmeal with no additional sugar. It came in in a box (with a pour spout, not single serving packs) in the health/diet food section of a regular grocery store.
