I go to work to WORK...not to EAT!

  • ok, i posted about this before here...but need to again. cuz, well, it's come up AGAIN.

tomorrow EVERYONE up here in the "upstairs" is having a tail-gaiting party...meaning there's gonna be food EVERYWHERE!!! my boss just asked me what i'm bringing and i said, "nothing"...i'm not participating. then of course, i'm hearing others say, "meatballs, fudge..."

SERIOUSLY! WE DO NOT COME TO WORK TO EAT!!!

i'm sorry but i'm being made to feel like i'm not a "team player" all because i don't want to participate in this gorge fest. I even mentioned, "i'm sorry but you all KNOW i am watching what I eat - and plus, honestly I am a binge eater and when I start, I don't stop. So i'm sorry but I will bring my lunch as I normally do - and I am not participating - unless there's healthy munchies like the vegee tray (and even then, i'm gonna make sure to bring my own light dressing tomorrow...)

but honestly. my new saying - we come to work to WORK not to EAT!
  • But you don't want to come across like a crabby person who got up "on the wrong side of the sheetcake" either.

there is food everywhere, it's superbowl party weekend, but it's office commradery too. I'm betting that your motivation and past accomplishments will keep you focused....your co-workers won't force you (i hope) and you'll walk away from the office feeling like you won.
  • exactly - i DON'T want to come across like that - but even if i'm really "nice" about it and try to "ignore" the fact that there IS food everywhere...everyone will STILL have it around! and too - they'll be putting it on the little half desk between mine and my next-door neighbor's cubicle (and yes, i move the food to the filing cabinet behind said neighbor...but it'll still end up on the middle table again...and i'll move it AGAIN and i'll end up looking like that "annoying health freak". believe me, it's what happened at christmas. i know.

and i think, too - the thing that REALLY irks me...is that half of my department is ALWAYS "watching what they eat" and "trying to lose weight".

well, i'm not TRYING to do anything. I AM DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I'm not "trying" to lose weight. I AM losing weight. Why? because even though i LOVE those greasy sugary junk foods and yes, they taste OH MY GOD INCREDIBLE...i KNOW that they're not good for me.

but those here that are always complaining about how tight their clothes are and how much weight they're "trying" to lose...those are the ones who are like, "oooh yeah, bring your fudge...mmmm meatballs? oh yeah!" and i see them stuffing their face. and no - i don't say anything to them, cuz it's not my place. i just eat my healthy low point foods that i know i'm NOT going to be mad at myself later for eating - i know i'm NOT going to end up feeling sick later because i binged on alllll the food in the office. i KNOW i'm going to be able to go to the gym tomorrow night and work out like normal because i DIDN'T eat all that greasy sugary junk that'll be around here.

now - don't get me wrong - i love the colts as much as the next person, and my boyfriend, his bro, sis-in-law and I are gonna be at my boyfriend's place on sunday and the bf and i are planning a GOOD little bit of food (he's watching what he eats too, which is good) and i'm saving ALL of my flex points for SUNDAY.

but again, i come to work to WORK not to GORGE on food. :-(

    sorry it's just frustrating.
  • Maybe you could bring something that you would like to eat as well...like bring a fruit platter, or a veggie tray. Or, maybe even lower fat meat and whole wheat buns to share. This way you could still join in and bring something to share.

I know how you feel! It is frustrating!
  • hmmmm, Indychick, it's sounds to me like you need a day off from work tomorrow.....start coughing....and enjoy a nice 3 day weekend if you can't manage that, is it possible for you to work "off-site"?
  • hehe. I already asked...too short of notice. :-( believe me...i tried that already! lol. but yeah. it's just so frustrating - i mean, i have a good friend of mine who has the same problem with where she works - only it's an EVERY DAY thing...they have a candy bowl where she works, and she is addicted to sugar. and they won't remove the bowl for her...and it's like she says...it's like waving a lit cigarette in front of someone who's trying to quit smoking saying, "oh man that tastes good"...

and that's what i'm saying...i just honestly believe that there shouldn't BE potlucks/pitch-in's/whatever you want to call bringing in food for people to share...i don't think that belongs at work.
  • tough it out, (itsonly8hours,itsonly8hours).....and INWARDLY GLOAT. Your determination is admirable....and thank you! you inspired me to avoid 2 deadly items in the cafeteria today.....fried chicken and freshly grilled reuben sandwiches....I figure I saved about 600-700 calories just by reading your posts.

I suspect that you will be the one strutting around in a well fitting summer outfit in your office in 3 months....no tight pants and a muffin top hidden in a baggy shirt for you!
  • :-D no...thank YOU! seriously. you're right...i am SO gloating inside!!! lol...

well, it's today...and I went around to all our teams up here...and yes, i LOOKED (but didn't touch)...meatballs, doughnuts, shredded beef, cake, casseroles, brownies, crackers and cheese/dip/crab dip you name it - it's out there...right this second as I type...but ya know what I did?

I took a plate and FILLED it with celery, zuchini, yellow squash, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, some strawberries, a few grapes and orange slices - and yes, I even took 3 tbsp of spinach dip (2 pts) - and I added my chicken that I brought with me to work for lunch (was gonna have a salad from the salad bar in the cafe with my own added chicken...)

and, I took one VERY SMALL (yet rich) brownie bite (i figure 2 pts for the thing, it's like the size of a 4 quarters stacked. and i TOTALLY savored it.

and i'm sitting here doing my work (ok, and being on 3fatchicks...lol) and laughing inside at my co-workers who each have 2 plates FULLLLL of fattening junk. and are complaining, "ooooh i can't eat anymore"...as they keep stuffing their mouths.

and ya know what? my lunch of vegees, little bit of spinach dip, chicken, and one very small, very delicious brownie bite.

I am "good to go". I mean it - i'm very satisfied, and yes - i KNOW all that food is out there - and yeah, i'll admit PART of me WANTS to go get a "taste" of everything - but why? what WOULD be the point? i'm very satisfied with what I ate - and if I get hungry in the next few hours, I DO have a 4 pts smart ones in my lunch box.

    now...
5 meatballs, bbq sandwich, a hotdog, some cheese bites, some baby sausages...and a TON of sugary things (full big brownie, rice krispie treat, some other things...) not to mention the crackers and crab dip...
yeah - that's what my co-worker just rattled off that she just ate. UGH! seriously. i not only don't WANT to do that...i couldn't!!! seriously - i'd end up feeling SO sick and it'd sit there and i wouldn't be able to concentrate on anything else.

so you're right - i know that I made the RIGHT choice and I also know that now I'll be HAPPY with myself and not regret anything.

i know some people would say it's not "right" for me to gloat inside...but it's more due to the fact that...if you complain about how tight your clothes are getting and how "full" you are after GORGING yourself...i'm just very happy with myself that I DID NOT do that - because in the past - I'd have been right there doing the same exact thing.

Edit - 1:07 p.m. now she's complaining that she IS going to vomit because she ate so much. i HATE feeling like that I and I am so proud of myself that I did NOT do that. cuz seriously - in the past I would have.

and i'm STILL "satisfied" - not feelin' hungry yet for anything else...
  • Hooray -- good for you! You know, food will always be around us and we really cannot ask people to remove the candy dish or not have parties at work. It is up to us to learn how to deal with you. Sounds like you have. Your co-worker certainly hasn't.

    Keep up the good work!
  • Isn't it amazing how good just a bite of something you havent had for a long time tastes... and how satisfying it can be! I had the same situation at my old job.. I am off of anything white, and pasta is my downfall... however when they have the pot lucks at work I take 1 teaspoon full of pasta... and just savor that bite...

I recently switched jobs.. and they had a going away party for me and my co-workers really out did themselves.. as far as the eye could see food... but in that situation .. I had a small (tsp.) sample of just about everything.. took a bite of each and made a point to rave about whatever someone brought... it made the person sooo happy so in that case it became more important that day to let each person know that i appreciated what they had done for me... HOWEVER i was still way too full and ended up with tummy ache!

hahaha so after that long story... I would just reccomend in the future that you just say... OH .. cant have much today my tummy isnt feeling too good

people seem to understand a sick tummy better than someone just saying "i am watching what i eat" yeah i know u shouldnt have to explain yourself to anyone... but also remember that if you shun the goodies they have gone to the trouble to fix it also can hurt their feelings...

and I have a receipe for ya for the next pot luck.. I believe it is 3 ww points per cup

2 (small) box sugar free black cherry jello
    1 cup of hot water
1 can of sugar free cherry pie filling ( regular if u arent watching sugar intake)
1 large fat free cream cheese
1 fat free cool whip (larger one)
    3 packets equal

spread the pie filling in a flat glass baking dish
mix the water with the jello, and pour over the pie filling place in the fridge to set

in a bowl mix the cream cheese with the cool whip and mix in the equal..

when the jello mixture is set, spoon the cream cheese mixture over the top..
you can also top this with ground nuts to make it look prettier..

This stuff is awesome and tastes just like cherry cheese cake! Even those not dieting will rave over it!
  • Oh I can so relate to this food at work thing. We have candy machines in the lunchroom along with 2 pop machines. On Valentines day they set up a chocolate fondue. I am getting so tired of being rewarded with food. And it is never healthy food. I am doing the Zone and I find that the bigger breakfast with a good serving of protien really helps keep me on track. But we also have the candy dishes sitting around. I am new to this site and some of the success I am seeing here is incredible. Thanks for all your sharing. I am just getting started and hope this time to stick with it.
