What's up with Rachel Ray throwing salt over her shoulder

  • Ok, what's up with Rachel Ray throwing salt over her shoulder every time she adds it to food she's cooking? I've heard of it, but does anybody really do this at home? I mean, wouldn't your floor get kind of grainy? Who wants all that salt on the floor?! It just doesn't seem like a very practical thing to do...even if you are superstitious!
  • She is a bit...ummm....spastic.

What cracks me up is how she has all these abbreviations (EVOO, GB) and then explains them each time so then it takes twice as long to say than if she had just said it the first time. Of course for her, that still isnt very long.
  • Hey you two ~ be easy on my girl now
  • i love rachel ray, she's such a kook! one time she was carrying stuff on a tray and was like "if the olympics had a tray carrying competition, i would definitely win!!" seriously? she's so random.
  • it's an old superstition that if you spill salt you must throw some over your left shoulder to keep the "bad spirits" away...

Rachel Ray makes me tired. She's just too darn chipper and has too many shows... that being said, I do enjoy 30 minute meals.
  • I love Rachael Ray!!! She makes me laugh! I also throw salt over my shoulder, something I got from my grandma. I know it's just an old superstition, but why take chances! I like to keep all the bad spirits away!!
  • emeril does it too!!!
  • In my husband's family they are nuts about WASTING salt. This would be a big no-no, G-d forbid moment at my MIL's house.
  • I was really serious about the salt on the floor/grainy floor thing...isn't that a problem for those of you that do it inside the house, or do you stop and clean it up right away? On a TV show, I'm sure they have people to clean up within seconds after the show is over, but doesn't it make more work for you?
  • I don't throw very much, just a pinch. I've never noticed the floor being grainy or anything. I do sweep once a week, but I'd do that even if I didn't throw salt! So it doesn't add any work, just keeps the bad spirits away! Or maybe it is the grainy floor that keeps them away, and I'm just to unobservant to notice!!
  • Im sure during the break someone comes in and sweeps it up if its danergous.
  • We also do this at home. My kids (14&12) will say "salt, salt, as you fly-hit the devil in the eye!". I'm not sure where they got that one!
  • I like Rachael Ray, but the only thing that gets on my nerves about her is that she is SOOO talkative that she cuts off her guests in mid-sentence.

They literally cannot finish a sentence.
  • I don't wear shoes inside my house, and I tend to walk barefoot during the spring and summer, so the grains would probably drive me CRAZY!
