  • I was wondering if anyone doing any yoga around here?
I got out of it a while back and i started to get back into it
this month because there is so much positivity around it,
and since i couldn't run due to my knee. I thought yoga
    would benefit me.

    I'm trying to be positive.
Feel my body more, and know it inside and out.
Get more flexible so i don't have more injuries.
    Become a yogi. just kidding.

Anyone here practicing it or know of any great threads about it?
I wanted to get a group going here for it as well if anyone is up for it.
    Let me know!
  • Yay!

I've been doing it more frequently as I have the time in the morning now. I try to get in an hour on Mon & Wed before class to keep me "straight" and from fire bombing my section during my ensemble rehearsal. I think I need to slow down though. I did a back bend last week and pulled every muscle back there. I would def particiapate in a group! I could certainly afford to learn more.
  • I take a yoga class once or twice a week at the gym I love it!
  • I FINALLY bought a yoga mat and a beginner's dvd today. I've been wanting to for two months now, but never did. I'm excited!! I looked into attending a yoga class at the campus gym, but turns out we have to pay for drop-in classes!! What's up with that? You'd think it would be included in the student fees or something. Grr.

So I figured my own would be more cost-effective... I'm watching it right now, just as a run-through. I believe in knowing what you're getting into before you do it It looks really great. I'm going to do it tomorrow morning!

A question, though: They use yoga bricks in a couple of the poses for support. I don't currently have yoga bricks (and the ones I saw were like $10/each, the dvd uses two). Do you think I can do the poses without the bricks until I find some?
  • Jaime, you can do the poses without the bricks. Just don't go as far into them. Generally I only use the bricks when I want to go further into a pose but can't touch the floor. Personally, I only use them maybe three times in a 75 minute class. Have fun! What video did you get?
  • I go to a yoga class at a local studio about once a week, and LOVE IT! I wish I could go every day, but its like $8 per class, so I have to limit myself. I'm definately interested in a group. Also, looking to find a good yoga DVD to do at home, any suggestions? Ive been doing Anasara (sp?) yoga, but am open to other types.
Jamie- I also don't think you need bricks, i never use them
  • Mine is called "Quick Start Yoga for Weight loss," and the company that makes it is Gaiam. I got it at Target. They had a lot of their products.

I think the 'for weight loss' thing is a gimick, and I certainly didn't buy it because it said that... I bought it because it looks like a good beginner's series. Little gimick alarm bells went off in my head when I read the back -- "this diet-free weight loss solution will... etc" Gotta laugh at them playing on our weaknesses -- dieting is hard, I don't want to diet, I just want to lose weight.... where's my magic pill?
  • Denice, I just ordered Yoga Shakti on Amazon. Apparently you can program it so that the poses you really want are incorporated. It got rave reviews on amazon and I'm pretty excited to try it I'll let you know how it is! I used to have the Rodney Lee videos but never got into those, but I've been going to a yoga class once a week at my gym since aroudn June and that's really gotten me into the practice.

Jaime, yeah, dang it, where's that magic pill? Diet free? that's sooo ridiculous. It's really too bad that lots of people keep falling for those marketing ploys I know I did, for YEARS! Yikes. Let us know how the video is, I'm always on the hunt for good ones
  • Okay, I just did my yoga... It feels gooooood! My back feels nice a streched out, it was very calming. It's designed to do in the morning, so the guided meditation minute or two at the end is like, "find one healthy thing you will focus on today and state it clearly in your mind." which would be helpful if it were 9 am, not 9 pm But it was good!! Very basic though, I wouldn't recommend it if you have previous yoga experience. It might get boring. And most things worked fine without the bricks, would have been easier if I had less stomach in the way when I bend down

djs - be sure to tell us how that yoga program is, it sounds really neat that you can tailor it to what you want to do!
  • your editing reason cracked me up.... I hear you!!

Yeah, the stomach thing SUCKS. I'm usually the only girl in the class who can't do some of the poses because the belly gets in the way (especially shoulder stand and plow! that really frustrates me because it looks so cool! oh well). Glad you liked your video- my arms are definitely a lot more toned since I started yoga, thanks to all those sun salutations!!!

I meant to go to a class this morning but i slept through it... oh well
  • Haha, sometimes I amaze myself that I've gotten this far without making too much sense when I write. Either I perform well under pressure or grad school has lowered expectations

Well I did the second half of my yoga dvd yesterday and it was okay. It was supposed to be energizing. Just a lot of different seated folding poses that was more like 20 minutes of stretching. I might use it later if I feel sick but still want to do something. I also did my resistance training vid yesterday and boy are my problem areas sore!! My abs and my shoulders... hooboy. I'm thinking this evening I'll hop on the mat and do that first part of the yoga again to help stretch things out. I'd love to keep up this trend of doing some exercise every day that I find myself in suddenly!!
  • I just started today doing it at home. I think I'll be doing this in the morning before I go to work and then run after I get off of work. I've subscribed to yoga life. I like that magazine.
  • What sorts of stuff do you find in the magazine?
  • namaste!

all this yoga talk has gotten me in the mood

Jaime - I agree about the bricks, you don't need them. You could use a towel to help you in some stretching poses if you can't reach your feet. There is a great article HERE about how yoga is not just for the slim.

djs - I have heard great things about Shiva Rea's Yoga Shakti DVD. You program it exactly how you want to work out and from what I gather, it will take quite some time before you become repetitive and get bored. Its definately on my 'to buy' list.

So I want to get back into doing yoga. That feeling I get after doing a session is like walking on air and I feel at peace.

I think that this week I am going to do yoga every day - just 30 minutes to an hour depending on my time available.

    Time to get connected
  • Ange - Thanks for the article... I'm glad people recognize that it's not just skinny people who ought to feel comfortable working out! I definitely have to shift myself around in a couple of poses... Mostly just the girls tho as they seem to get in the way most often

The video I'm using right now doesn't give me pose names. Anybody know of a good place to find out? I'd kind of like to know what I'm getting better at!
