Has anyone been watching Ugly Betty on Channel 4?

I find it really annoying that in tv/movieland "ugly" = glasses and "overweight" , yes she may 10lb heavier than your usual American tv actress but she's certainly not big.

Having said all that I do find the show entertaining!

So what do you reckon, refreshingly different to have non-perfect lead character, or just patronising? Personally I'd do a lot to be as "ugly" as her!

I saw first episode not sure if there have been others. Don't forget in Hollywood if you are over size 0 then you are a problem. The glasses and her figure weren't enough so she had to have braces too.

I don't think she's ugly at all, but it's entertainment - if they'd picked a real heinous looking woman everyone would think it's cruel... It's a bit of a shallow pretense for a show if you ask me...

I don't think she's meant to be actually ugly is she? Just not a skinny fashionista type. It's just a frothy show based on a soap opera I think. I did like Lucy Davies in last weeks as the presenter of fashion tv. Now she is someone who's gone all skinny since leaving for American tv.

Ya'll know that this show actually started in Mexico (I think) and it was such a hit that Salma Hayek decided to bring it to the USA. It won several Golden Globe awards, including one for America Ferrara (sp?) who plays Betty. I think the best thing about the show is that Betty is beautiful on the inside and that all the pretty people around her are not so pretty on the inside. My DH and I watch all the episodes, and it just keeps getting better.

I've seen the show once or twice. The girl who plays Betty is very talented. Keep in mind the show is called "UGLY" Betty, not "FAT" Betty. Sorry, Serena but you're the one who connected the FAT and the UGLY together. (I'm just trying to be postive here. )

But I do think they are using the term ugly as a metaphor, as in she's just not you're typical fashion magazine type. I think the show is an exageration. And kind of like alinnel says, Ugly Betty is really the prettiest one there, at least on the inside, where it counts most and that really transcends to the outside as well.

I think I only connected the "fat" and "ugly" together because of an interview I read with America Ferrera where she said that one of the good things about playing the role of Ugly Betty was that she didn't have to worry about staying in shape. Even the Channel 4 website describes the show's premise as "How can an ordinary girl – a slightly plump plain-Jane from Queens – possibly fit in?"

Sorry I was not meaning to sound like I'm taking it all too seriously, like I said before I do enjoy the show!

Don't forget about the dreadful anti-fashion outfits!!

Also, I HATE to be a debbie downer, but, I think the show meant for Fat=Ugly but also Fat can =Good Person anyway.

I think that the premise is supposed to include her chubbiness as one of the things that makes her "ugly" along with the glasses, braces, clothes, non-descript hair, lack of makeup, ect.

America is know for being a "bigger" actress, as her roles in "Real Women have Curves" and her jean size in "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" have touched on.

Just an observation............

I'm loving this show so far! I feel so sorry for Betty sometimes. They really do like to humiliate her, don't they?

I wouldn't take it all too seriously, though. Her character is a walking caricature of everything the superficial fashion world hates i.e. short, fat (i.e. bigger than a size 0 US), no fashion sense at all whatsoever, not particularly attractive (braces, NHS glasses, unibrow, no makeup, bad hair). In real life, America Ferrara is actually quite attractive.

The thing is, from day 1, the audience is on Betty's side. The fashion world is just full of superficial people who judge on appearances only, and their characters are completely unlikable, with the exception of her gorgeous boss. Yummy!

I am just loving this show it's fantastic....

I think we can all guess what is going to happen at the end!

Yes I am another fan of Ugly Betty. I love these sort of shows. Betty always seem to come out on top in the end which is good.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that show. It's hysterical!
