My hair seems to be really thinning out. It's naturally thick so you can't tell by looking at it.....but when I run my fingers through it, a ton comes out every time. I think this may be caused by my medication I'm on, Zoloft and perhaps also my diet. I'm not sure what I'm missing. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Eeek! I would call your doctor about it, but are you taking any vitamins? I think they are crucial especially when dieting to make sure you are getting everything your body needs that you may not be consuming or consuming enough of.

My hair seems to be coming out a lot more than usual too, and I am young and take my vitamin almost every day. So I'm pretty sure it's related to me being on this diet. Since it's never happened before, and I don't take any medication. Not sure what option there is for fixing it though
It sounds like you aren't getting any healthy oils in your diet. That will cause your hair to fall out. So will some vitamin deficiencies. You may have cut too much from your plan.
I was losing my hair before I made lifestyle changes due to an autoimune disorder. My hair is really thin on top now, but the hair loss has slowed.
I was recommended by my stylist to use prenatal vitamins and they made a difference. I think it is because they have high B vitamins. Also, my dermatologist encouraged me to include more healthy oils in my diet.
I do think it is the best idea to get a checkup because many medical conditions can be related to hair loss.
Make sure you are still getting fats in your diet. Lack of fat can lead to hair thinning and making your skin feel gross. Add in some eggs... cook with olive oil... eat nuts... take a fish oil supplement... if it didn't start until you started your diet, it's probably the diet... however since you are taking a medication that is known to have side effects that are different for different people, I would also check with your doctor.
Fat combined with protein in a meal is also a good way to keep yourself feeling full! They are made to work together!
"Other less common Zoloft side effects may include blushing, frequent urination, hair loss, heart attack, hemorrhoids, hiccups, high blood pressure, ..."
If I were you, I would stop using the medication and see if the problem continues. Obviously, the other mentioned things might be a problem but the medication is the easiest variable to test.
Eee bad advice!... talk to your doctor before stopping a medication! Especially if you are in the routine of taking it now... changing your diet would definitely be the easiest thing to test.
If that doesn't work over the span of a few weeks... move on to other sources like the medication!
what really helps your hair is B-vitamin. You should try adding linseeds to your morning muesli or just mixing 1 tablespoon of linseeds with 1/2 cup of yoghurt. After putting linseed in liquid, wait for 5-10 minutes before eating it, so that the "linjuice" extracts. That's it! (it also balances out your digestion, by the way )
Talk to your doctor, definitely. I am on a low-fat, high protein diet, and although I take flax oil daily, the last time I did this type of diet, I had hair loss issues, too. Like you, mine is really thick, so it didn't matter much, but for me it was too little oils/fats in my diet.
I had this SAME problem! I was out of the country for a bit, and always in direct sunlight all day for a month, and when I came back... my hair seemed to be falling out. At first, I blamed it on my dead hair breaking..
But my doctor put me on birth control and recommended I take a multi vitamin to see if it helps. I've only been doing this for 3 weeks, so far I haven't seen any direct changes. But I'm going back to the doctor next month and I'll let you know if it helps.
The multi-vitamin shouldn't hurt though!
Also, have you ever been tested for an auto-immune disease? Two people I know started losing their due to this.
