Relaxation eating...

  • I think any pint of ice cream (especially ben and jerrys) should have some kind of warning label on it -- not single serve, if you are on a diet stay away, etc. I like to pop a bag of microwave popcorn at night, because I have to eat something and it takes a while to eat it. My best defense -- go to bed -- we could all use a good night's sleep and if I find I just can't stay away from the food, I tuck myself into bed!! I also work from home and should be typing at night, so when I have a binge, I end up working until 2 a.m. because you can't eat and type -- so I try to remember how tired I get when I do this and how hard the next day is.
  • Hi Lucy,

This was a big problem for me as I cared for my mother for years so it was difficult to have 'me' time - so food was a way of kicking back and letting off steam. Think it is hard to get out of and not sure how easy it is for you to get out of the house if you have young children. I took up lots of evening classes initially to just get me out of the house - and I went to the cinema a lot. If you can't go out regularly - maybe you can use the special time for yourself to prepare a really delicious healthy meal - that's a way of treating yourself but that doesn't jeopardise your goals. Or just have a soak in the bath with a glass of wine....Not feeling very inspired at the moment - will think about it!

  • Thinking that I will pick up the knitting kit today after work and that should keep me busy at night so the next time a craving hits me at night I will be prepared!!!!
  • Colleen....
another 5 footer here with one more suggestion. I drink a cup of Swiss Miss Diet Hot Cocoa each evening around 7:30 or 8:00--my previous start snacking time. It has 25cal. However, it satisfies my chocolate cravings and because it is hot I have to sip it so that I drink it slow enough to savor it. There have been nights that I have just gone to bed early to keep myself away from the kitchen.
  • I had to relearn how to relax without cigarettes and now I have to relearn how to relax with out food. Hubby and I would tuck the girls into bed, then settle down with a big bowl for each of us of Movie Theater Butter popcorn and caffeine free Coke and watch our shows. One bag = one serving, right?

Now, I have sugar free jello with 2 tbsps of Lite Cool Whip or celery with 2 Tbsps of natural peanut butter. I try to drink water, but sometimes I splurge with a diet soda. Tried a new one last night...the brand is Polar..this one was diet Fudge Brownie...tastes like a Tootsie Roll! It helps that my hubby is doing this with me as we can help each other stay on track. I also find a lot of encouragement and motivation when I 'surf' around on 3FC.
  • I have a hot cup of tea in the evenings, and I add a teaspoon or so of benefiber to it. You can't tell it is in there, AND it helps you get that "full" feeling. Works like a charm for me - and there are some wonderful flavored herbal teas to pick from now days.

  • Hi Lucy -

See how many of us can relate? Night time is the WORST for my cravings. Mostly, they're not hunger, they're wanting to feel full and satisfied. Right now, I'm buying many flavors of herbal tea so I don't get bored, and I don't know about you, but staying away from the TV helps me. When I sit in front of the TV, I want to eat.

One of the snack foods I've used in the past for a crunch crave is sliced up celery and carrots--into little rounds. It feels a bit like crunching chips and I don't need to worry about the calories. More veggies -- that's healthy!

    You can do it!!!!
