Anyone ever have hives

  • Could it be the soy? After drinking a shake I developed terrible hives, itchiness, and a swollen throat. I was rushed to the ER where I was treated with Prednisone and Pepcid which started working 15 minutes later. I then had an allergy test which tested positive for soy. I now have to use soy free protein shake/products.
  • Each person could have a different trigger for the hives but the three I've seen discussed the most are soy, Sucralose, and ace-k (Acesulfame potassium).

I went soy-free/gluten-free due to thyroid. I'm cutting back on sweeteners so the only ones I'll be using will be in the packets (no additions). I have also purchased some plain powders and some stevia-sweetened protein powders. There ARE options if you look for them but it is about learning and doing some research.
  • Thanks so much for this thread. I am new to the Program and was not aware of the soy or the incredible amount of splenda. I have done an internet search and found a few articles but really appreciated this forum.

Are there soy-free, splenda-free IP products? One chart I referred to said Yes and another said No. I don't see my coach until Wednesday so thought I would come to the experts here for insight. I feel itchy, irritable and my throat burns after the products. No hives, yet.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

There are soy- free products. There are also Sucralose-free
I haven't cross-referenced the two to fond that particular short list.
  • Thanks Lisa....are you able to share with me which IP products are 1) soy free and 2) sucralose free? I will look to buy them on my visit Wednesday.

    Thanks so much!

    I've attached the soy/gluten-free list I created.
I haven't cross-referenced for sweeteners as that is not what I have restricted.
You can check ingredients at plainprotein.com

However, you might want to just cut out one item at at a time to try to narrow-down which thing is causing you the problems.
