How do you plan to "handle" Halloween?

I don't think that handing out something like pencils is weird at all. When I was a kid, a dentist on our block used to hand out toothbrushes!

As for me, I have bought some candy for myself but am trying to not go overboard. I like the smaller bags that just allows me to get my sugar fix because I find the candy to be so addictive.

I love pretty much everything about fall from the leaves and cooler weather to the candy, donuts and cider and pumpkin everything!

I guess this holiday candy is a precursor to the holiday food, we'll have Thanksgiving and Christmas here before we know it, where does the time go!
  • No one has mentioned halloween parties for grown ups! Every year the fiance and I have gone to the halloween party at our campus bar. That includes free drink tickets and lots of crazy deep fried food. Thankfully the fiance suggested saving money (costumes and party tickets and food and booze add up in price) so we've decided to watch scary movies with a bottle of wine and a few candy treats instead.

This is an awesome idea, especially if the kids who are coming to your house are from very low-income families. I know a physician who went to give a talk at her children's school and discovered that a lot of the kids there didn't even have their own toothbrush - they used their parents'. Something like giving out toothbrushes could actually be really useful.
  • I bought candies but I put them away in the covers...
and I'm going to give away the leftovers as soon as it is over.
  • Shishkeberry-Congrats on all those smoke-free3 days! keep up the good work.

  • I am thankful I have never liked candy. It's never been tempting to me. I don't mind a piece of 90% dark chocolate with some strawberries or ice cream on occasion but I have never felt tempted by Halloween candy.
  • I am taking one day at a time. I've come so far in the past 9 months and don't want to ruin everything with eating too many sweets. Also they don't have the same temptation to me as they used to.
  • A few of my friends are planning on running a 10k race on Halloween night...kinda neat that this is being organized! I'm hopeful they DO NOT have candy post-race!

Also, we do not get trick-or-treaters at my apartment complex, so no need to buy candy =)

My downfall is the candy bins at the grocery store - you can fill your own bag with an assortment, and of course they have the mellowcreme pumpkins. I've fallen victim to them several times already. As of this evening, I am making a vow to stay away from refined sugars for the rest of October. My wedding anniversary is in 3 weeks, and I need to drop a few (5) pounds before then!
  • I am allergic to chocolate so that is not a big deal.

On the other hand, I live out in the boonies, but keep one bag of candy, just in case.

Have not had a trick or treater in the last 5 years. Unless you count the neighbors longhorns that showed up last weekend and raided my squash patch before I could chase them home! LOL!
  • I was thisclose to buying candy corn. Then I realized I'd eat almost the entire bag....so I'm attempting to avoid buying any candy whatsoever.

Now, cookies...my roommate bought cookies and it's just killing me. I want some so bad, I'm frustrated. -_-
  • I'm glad my toothbrush suggestion is helpful , LOL it was funny being a kid and getting a toothbrush but it is a good idea I think because all that candy is sooo bad for teeth...

I bought those mellowcreme pumpkins this weekend at the grocery store and haven't gone overboard with them, thank goodness. They are definitely sweet!

I would love to have a Halloween Party for adults but it is a lot of work sometimes to host a party...

    Take care,

    Amy
  • I stay away from the candy and just check out the other "goodies" at the store: decorations. They're more fun and don't have any calories.
  • I don't buy candy. We always go to a potluck dinner party (with veg'n/organic/generally health-minded friends so there are lots of good choices) and then the kids trick or treat together.

My kiddo is willing to share his candy, but I decided my rule is that I will only eat it if I log it - and it's within my calories. (Now that I am in maintenance, I am inconsistent with logging. So if I am being lazy that day, then no candy.)
  • I'm going to have some candy like I do every year. I don't celebrate Halloween but I do take advantage of the opportunity to pig out on candy. Stressing my diet too much always backfires for me.
