  • Quote: Me too!!! I started doing elliptical at 265 lbs... lost 8 so far in 2 weeks. I am scared of the treadmill though, when I've done it in the I've always gotten shin splits so I've had to stop...

Did you encounter any trouble when you started running at a high weight?
    I love New Runners-

Troubles- Not so Much- But was it Easy? Um- NO_ it sucked- it hurts - my lungs burned- my body was TIRED AND SLUG, I was carrying all this weight- I had so much emotional not worhty or good enough thoughts to be on a treadmill trying to run next to 'fit' people - what was I doing on there- Did everyone see my belly bounce and jiggle? How big does my hiney look to the person behind me on the treadmill- What is Everyone thinking- ???

BUT---- this is NOT about THEM- (I'm sure of it now no one thinks that way- we think they do- they don't!) but this is about understanding that buidling up a base of endurance and fitness from nothing is NOT easy and it comes with some lung burning, some aches/pains, stiffness- the joints a little mad- you are carrying extra weight and they don't like it.

What is amazing is the commitment to become a runner- even if you fake it and don't like it- that it comes to you- it DOES get easier and you go longer and eventually you'll work on getting faster/stronger- but building yourself up to run for 40min is such a GREAT Deal- what it will do to your Spirit, Your Heart - Your Self Esteem!

3-4x weekly I ran/walked 3.1 miles- Each time I listened to my body- my mind and forced myself to run when I could and when I had to walk I would and when I regained some 'umph' I ran again and held that till I had to walk-
There is the C25k Program and it works for people! The diffference lies in a program telling you when you should walk/run- I love for people to mentally learn to do that for themselves- it creates a trust within you- it creates an unbelievable mental strength- it is so MENTAL- Running- Even today- Ladies for 1.5 miles of a 7:40 pace I oddly had these thoughts that said- you can't hold this- you are dying over here- just slow down- but DANG IT LADIES- FUDGE THAT- I held on and finished it out and now- I get such an amazing satisfaction from not backing down when my mind told my body to stop!

Shoes is important- get great shoes- go to a fitting store like Fleet feet and have them look at your stride- decide if you pronate or or if you are a normal runner- 75% of the time shin splints are the wrong shoes!
Plus if it's not the running shoes then I can offer you tips for massage, and ice and stretching after!

I'm here- the facebook- my blog- with LOTS of running stuff on there- I did for you -
  • p.s. congrats on those 8lbs - keep going!
  • Totally inspired to run. Sad thing is, I already have Runner's Knee! Seriously. Super funny, but not. Wonder if I can work through that. Off to check out your blog.
