Demystifying the scale

  • I'm the odd one here, I think
Well, I'm afraid you've confirmed what I already knew, Anne. I'm odd!

I normally weigh myself every morning, as soon as I get up and just before I step in the shower. I have a digital scale that weighs within 1/10th of a pound and I tend to weigh EXACTLY the same every morning! I would guess that this happens about 12 mornings out of 14. The other 2, I may find that I'm up or down 0.2 or 0.4 which is usually explainable by a large dinner the night before or being somewhat dehydrated. I'm not sure if this is because I tend to eat pretty much the same way everyday or if I truly am odd. Of course, at different times during the day, I do fluctuate a little depending on my last meal and the clothes I have on but not a great deal, I don't think. I've read so much about fluctuations of the scale and they usually say that even at the same time and with the same conditions, most people vary a few pounds either way. I'm very curious to know why, exactly, that I'm different this way.

Does anyone else have a fairly static weight first thing in the morning?
  • No Barb, I don't think that's odd if you are basically eating the same thing every day and weighing first thing in the morning nekkid. That's what I do and 8 times out of 10, the scale says the same thing. Mine measures in 1/2 pound increments so it's not quite as finely tuned, but pretty consistent. My point was that I want to see that consistency and I know my body well enough at this point to predict when I won't for a short-term, isolated behavior that has nothing to do with longer-term weight gain (like Chinese food = water retention, heavy leg workout = water retention). So if I start seeing higher numbers, even a half a pound for 4-5 days running, it's time to take a closer look at what I'm doing.

  • We are all very different and it seems perfectly normal to me to be reasonably stable. It doesn't show up in the data above since the days were pretty similar food-wise, but one of the big contributors to variation for me is that my food plan accommodates the amount of exercise I do. A sedentary day or day with light exercise gets me about 1700 calories, while an all day bike ride might get me 4000. And that's a lot more volume to carry around for a day or so.

Today I'm on some kind of a salt feast. I'll see that tomorrow for sure! Not convinced it's necessarily a bad thing once in a while since my BP is so low, but it's good to know about it and not be surprised.

  • Quote: Good job Anne, you truly helped alot of us with you data.
I need to set up a chart for my own fluctuations. I try and weigh in once a week.
This leads to A: Extremely good day, scale was cooperative.
B: Extremely bad day, scale was uncooperative.
I had some time to day and was much more rational. I went back and re-read this thread. Thanks again Anne. I also read my response and never did chart my own fluctuations. I need to do that as my post indicates. I can no longer afford to upset my self with something that is transit in nature. If its a gain, it needs to be acknowledge and deal with it if its a flucuations I need to acknowledge that as well.

I am getting too old for the roller coaster ride I put myself on.
  • Thanks for sharing your information. I used to be a strict once a week weigher. Now that I'm on maintenance, I tend to weigh every other day. I normally weigh of the morning, without clothes. I have noticed that if I weigh at night without clothes that I weigh less usually. I don't know why this would be the case.
