    GOOD AFTERNOON IN DECEMBER MAGNOLIAS

It is a very chilly day here this day for sure. There was a skiff of snow on the ground when I got up but has all melted now. The wind is blowing and making it chilly here on the ranch. We have some space heaters that do a great job so we don’t have to run the furnace which eats up gas where these little heaters draw very little electricity. I am comfortable and not too cold or too warm. Winter isn’t over for another of months so we are thinking seriously of getting another of these small heaters. Our host brou ght one of theirs over but it is way too large for our little space but we are thankful for it in the meantime.

Will has gone to the hospital which is a couple hours away to have X-rays done and have a conference with the doctors about his case. The doctors called for this meeting for tomorrow before his last scheduled chemo treatment ~ unless they have decided to give him 12 instead of the 6. I guess it all depends on what the test results are and they won’t have the results by tomorrow so he will have his 6th treatment then.

We have been invited over to the preachers house after morning services for lunch and are requested to bring our favorite bean recipe and there will be a contest on the best tasting ones. Hands down our favorite is my crock pot recipe which I will post here for you gals.

”ONE POT” DINNER a la Maggie
    Makes 4 quarts ~ serves 16
    INGREDIENTS

    1# ground beef
1# Italian sausage membrane off & cut up
¾# bacon, cut in small pieces
    1 cup chopped onion
    2 cans (1# 15oz size) pork & beans
    1 can (1#) kidney beans
1 can (1#) butter lima beans, drained
    1 cup ketchup
    ¼ cup brown sugar
    1 Tbsp. liquid smoke
    3 Tbsp. white vinegar
    1 tsp salt
¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

    1. Brown ground beef and sausage in skillet; drain
off fat and put beef & sausage in Crock Pot.
    2. Brown bacon & onions; drain off fat.
    3. Add bacon, onions & remaining ingredients to Crock Pot.
    4. Stir together well.
    5. Cover & cook on low for 4 to 6 hours.

SUSAN I don't blame you a bit for staying out of that mall. Wonder why those kids picked that place to duke it out anyway.

JEAN That is the way of things ~ always finding something else that should be packed with its like items. Maybe it is an conspiracy.

DONNA FAYE that you don't miss out on your appointment.

  • Good Afternoon! It is snowing and blowing in my corner of the world today. It's 18 degrees; definitely not a nice day outside! Bob and I went to do my cat chores while it was still dark this morning. I took a couple extra Cool Whip bowls to give Boomer extra food and water because of our pending forecast of snow and wind. They live on the edge of a golf course just off the highway and I was afraid I might not be able to get in their driveway if the wind drifts the snow, which it has before. We started counting money about 9 this morning. I suggested keeping Sunday, Christmas Eve, and the Friendship Fund envelopes separate thinking it would be easier to balance three smaller piles than one large one. Miracle of miracle we (the pastor's wife and I) balanced! It took me awhile to do my computer posting because some people give their 2016 pledge now, and the computer isn't ready for '16 yet.

Susan, the last few times we have been to the mall I noticed there were kids there without adults. I would guess middle school/early high school age and mostly girls. Maddy loves to go to the mall and just browse through the stores. She and Beth do that for their girl time together and then have lunch somewhere. Any more, I don't like being where there are crowds at all. Will you and Glory get together for New Year's?

Maggie, the couple I am cat sitting for are in southern Texas for a month, and she was saying it hasn't been at all warm. Strange weather all around but I'm thankful we aren't having the tornadoes and floods that some have had. I sure hope Will gets a good report from his doctor. Does he drive himself or does someone go with him? Two hours is a long drive when one doesn't feel good. Thanks for sharing your recipe! It looks good!

"Gma," hope you are busy cleaning and not sick.

I have laundry in the washer and dryer which are done, so time to fold the towels and start another load. Maybe I will start undecorating the tree. Both cats like to sleep under it and will miss it. Hope you all are enjoying a warm sunny day!
  • Maggie, quick question on the salad recipe. Do you drain the pineapple and is it a small can of evaporated milk, or large can?
  • Tuesday
    GOOD MORNING IN DECEMBER MAGNOLIAS

Yipekio I I went to WW last evening expecting to show a gain and Woweeee the scale gifted me with a maintain. Yep I showed a maintain and not a gain and was the only one in the WW room that did that and they were wowed. Sure put a smile on my face.

Will has gone for his 6th chemo treatment and a talk with the doctors about his blood-work they had the lab do on him yesterday. They are such a top notch group of doctors and nurses that work at that hospital we totally trust them.

JEAN I have used both sizes of the pineapple in that recipe and we prefer the smaller (tuna sized) can . I open the can and dump it in a strainer to drain before adding it. I usually get water packed but can’t always find that. If you don’t drain it first then the salad doesn’t set properly. The can of evaporated milk is the larger size. Our host drives Will to the hospital for he was a fireman and knows the ins and outs of all the roads if there happens to be a detour.

  • Good Evening! No more snow today and we had some bright sunshine this afternoon! I was lazy this morning and putzed around the house. This afternoon I had a scholarship coffee at the hospital, dropped books off at the library, did my cat chores, and counted the gift shop money. Our streets are a mess, after 5+ inches of new snow. The plows just plowed a path for cars to drive in, and left the snow along the curb. Now there are car and foot tracks which will freeze and be dangerous when trying to get from the car to the sidewalk. So dumb imo.

Maggie, on the maintain! It's really hard to do that around the holiday eating. Thanks for the recipe info. It's nice of your host to drive Will to his appointments. How long does the actual treatment take? I remember it took longer to get everything ready, for my mom, than for the chemo. It was in a teeny tiny bag, like maybe a cup of liquid at the most.

Not much newsy from here tonight. Hope you all enjoy a wonderful Wednesday tomorrow!
  • Good morning to you all. I have not curled up, but been busy and this cold or whatever has me worried of course. I didn't take my overnight stuff and noticed I am sitting here coughing so I am going to take my morning dose and more vitamin c. My throat hasn't developed into anything much, which I am thankful for.

I am going to go get my nails done today since I sure don't want to be doing it tomorrow on New Year's Eve. It will be nuts there are day. I have a few things to pick up.

Jack is going to have to start working the 12 on 12 off in about a week or so. The Mississippi is going over it's banks here in about a week. Flood stage is 34 ft and they expect it near 50 by Jan 8. I just hope it isn't a long long time. It is so hard on him. He isn't 30. They have started preparing out at the plant. The smaller rivers are already starting to crest in places. They all feed off the big river. We aren't close to the river, but I worry about Kelly as St Jude's is. It also cuts off traveling, which is what I worry about with Jack.

Maggie: Hoping they have good news about Will. Congrats on the maintain and thanks for the recipe.

Susan: We have had shootings, etc at every mall that has been here. They actually had a murder at the huge mall that used to be here and closed the whole thing and then a couple years later bulldozed it. Our nice mall just had a shooting not too long ago.

Jean: Glad you guys are ok. Jack's family in TX are experiencing high snow amounts and drifting. My sil is off work until tomorrow, (she is a nurse) but my bil has to go back and forth to work. He is a respitory therapist. My nephew got stuck at work and had to stay overnight where he works I guess.

    Everyone stay safe and warm!
  • Good Morning! We got up to some more snow, maybe an inch but enough to shovel. I made the gift shop deposit my first stop on my list, then went to get my nails done, next was a quick stop at Walgreens, on to the grocery store, and finally home again. After lunch I have a check to drop off at the hospital and then will go to church to count the late donations. I'm sure someone will expect their check, brought to the office tomorrow, to be processed for this year. I don't plan to be there and think the office will be closed anyhow.

"Gma," I'm glad to see you today! I was afraid you were sick and down in bed. I hope the flooding isn't as bad as they think it will be. I am just amazed at the variety of weather going on around the country. Will Jack have to work the same number of days if he works 12 hour shifts? I hope it won't last long. There have been several bad accidents around the area simply because people either forget or don't know how to drive on ice and snow, several deaths which is sad.

Bob will be home for lunch soon so I need to see what is left on the leftover shelf. Hope you all enjoy your day!
  • Late In The Evening
    GOOD EVENING IN DECEMBER MAGNOLIAS

It has been a lovely day here this day. We went to Camping World today and got some of those things you shove in the square on the ceiling under the kitchen fan and bathroom fan to keep the cold out and put some neat tape around the windows that stays put and is easy to remove which doesn’t take any paint off. We also stopped at the place that does our laundry. It is actually cheaper to have the gal in there do it for us than us to take in the soap and rinse stuff and all those quarters. She folds things up nice and neatly and puts what needs to be hung on hangers.

I made a delicious pot of chicken noodle soup using that chicken our dear friend had put in a baggie for me to bring home last evening. They buy it in huge bags when they go to Sam’s Club shopping. There is enough soup left to have another go round with it possibly tor tomorrow. Since it will be NewYear’s Eve we have a bottle of non alcoholic bubbly grape juice in the fridge getting nice and cold that we will drink.

    JEAN LOL you have winter.

DONNA FAYE They took Will off the liquid stuff that uses the pump and put him on pills that he will take MTWTF and have S&S off. He will do two weeks then he is off two weeks of that and they they will see how many sessions from there he will need to do that.

  • Good morning to you all. It is cold here this morning, low 30's but at least we are dry for right now so no snow or icy conditions. I put a load of towels in the washer and put away dishes, took my meds, etc. Jack just left for work.

I am going upstairs and start getting it cleaned today and tomorrow. I want to pack a hospital bag too so will take a list upstairs and put what needs to be put in it.

I went out yesterday and got my nails cut down and polished and such and got a few things at WM then came home and put it all away. I don't have to go out today, thank goodness as the wind is pretty bad too.

I lost three lbs so am glad about that. You never know over the holidays what is going to happen. I haven't weighed myself since my pharmacy appointment. We shall see what the scale at the hospital says on Monday.

Maggie: Glad you are getting your RV winterized. I am sure that will help to keep the cold out. We had beef and noodles last night. I used a beef tenderloin as the beef though it is more expensive, it is a lot leaner too. Tonight is chicken night. I tried to change it up and we have had pork, fish, beef and chicken this week.

Jean: Jack will be working 7PM to 7AM seven days a week until the river recedes when it crests. Last time he worked this for about 3 weeks straight. It was a real mess out there last time as it had flooded roads and such and you had to keep maneuvering your route. It is a lot harder when it is dark outside as well. I dread it as I don't know what my post surgery situation will be and he will be sleeping while I am up so I need to be quiet for him. Sound carries through our vents in this place. I just hope the neighbors are quiet for him. During the week it usually is as they work and go to school but the weekend can be loud with cars having speakers jacked up and stuff like that.

Everyone have a good Thursday. I am going to turn the heat up just a bit as I am cold sitting here.
  • End of a Year
    GOOD AFTERNOON IN DECEMBER MAGNOLIAS

It is a rather chilly day here. Will is outside building me a set of steps to make it easier to get into this MH. The existing retractable ones have the steps too far apart to make it easy to use them. He is building wooden ones with a hand rail that will work great with the ones attached to the MH retracted.
    .
While out and about we came up on a fire-works shed that had them for sale to put off tonight. We bought a box of those real long sparklers to play around with when it gets dark to usher in the new year. We get a brand new year tomorrow.

DONNA FAYE I feel sorry for Jack having to work those long hours to usher in a new year with possible flooding. Congratulations on your loss ~ no matter how long it took it is a loss.

HOWDY Jean & Susan, hope all is well with you ladies.

  • Good Afternoon! The sun is shining brightly with just a slight breeze blowing. It was 0 when I came downstairs this morning but has warmed up to 22. I needed to mail a church birthday card so made a trip to the post office first thing this morning. I also had a check to drop off at the hospital so did that on my way back home. I fixed a casserole for lunch (tired of ham!) and have written some thank you notes this afternoon. I have dishes to do, probably later.

Maggie, yes, winter has definitely arrived in my neighborhood. At least the sunshine helps make it seem warmer. I hope the pills will work as well, or better, for Will. The wooden steps sound like a good plan. You are a kid at heart with sparklers!

"Gma," will you have to remove your nail polish before surgery? I did. They told me it had something to do with oxygen in the body. That's been many years ago so maybe you won't have to. on another loss! Any loss is a great loss, especially at this time of year. It's too bad Jack couldn't have a 12 hour shift when it's day light. I hope it doesn't last long. I had to chuckle at you turning your heat up. Mine's been up for a long time although I do turn it down at night.

I have some emails I need to sort through and either answer or dump. Hope you all have an enjoyable evening, whatever your plans might be.
  • Good morning to you all. I truly hope this is the best year for my lovely friends here.

Well we aren't starting out the year too well. They had a meeting at the plant yesterday and they are starting the 12 hour shifts tomorrow!!! The commissary is not open today so we have to get our groceries at WM as I won't be able to grocery shop and Jack is going to work the days since one of the other guys wants the nights. So we have to shove everything into today. We have to grocery shop, Jack has to get his haircut, we have to get the upstairs finished cleaning today, ugh. One of the worst things is we have to have dinner around 8 PM and that is way late for me. We usually eat at 4 o'clock. Jack is going to have to take extra snacks he can eat around that time because his breakfast is around 5:30am and then lunch will be around 11 am so it is too long for him to wait.

I have a haircut and color tomorrow and Sunday my waxing so that will all be done for awhile. Thank goodness we have a second car now.

The fireworks kept me up late last night. They sounded like they were in our backyard and I always stay away once they start because I worry about the closeness of the condos and all the trees and those idiots setting something on fire.

Maggie: I have problems with steps at the movie theater because they are far apart and pretty big. On top of that, I have to hold the hand rail and it is always sticky. I have to sit down and use my hand wash right away.

Jean: Hope your New Year's starts off well. Yes, I have to remove my polish hands and toes. They always worry about my acrylic nails too as they put that oxygen thing on your finger, but it has always worked.

Everyone have a great day. Jack is going to eat some cereal so he reads the paper online.
  • 2016! Cloudy and cold today with a high of 50 expected. I rhink winter is now here to stay.

Glory, Norah and I are getting together today for dinner and quilting. That will be a pleasant way to start the new year.

I'm glad the holidays are over and I get get back to my regularly scheduled life. I filled out my calendars for this year so I'm ready to go.

Faye, bummer Jack has to work so much. I know he'll be exhausted. I drive right by Walmart and shop at Kroger, Whole Foods, or Trader Joe's. A lot of the time Walmart's groceries are more than Kroger for the things I buy. I'll be praying for your successfully surgery, speedy recovery, and no more female issues!

Jean, I'm with you on the weather. They say it's because of the El Nino but come March it'll be switching to El Nina and we'll have many major hurricanes this year - the last time El Nina came was when FL had 5 devastating hurricanes. I'm sure not looking forward to that. We have a lot more flooding now. My flood insurance is due in February and I hope it doesn't go up a lot.

Maggie, I hope Will won't need more treatment after this. How nice that he can make the steps and railing for you. Sparklers sound like fun. I went to bed before midnight last night but I woke up when the guns and fireworks went off.

    Have a wonderful day.
  • Happy New Year! It is a bright sunny day in my corner of the world and a warmer 35 degrees right now. A great way to start the new year! I've been double checking my calendars before I put 2015 away, doing a some laundry, and started to balance my check book. I have a WM charge made in November right on the bank cut-off day for our statement. I assumed it would be on this statement and it's not so debating what to do. Our cable, Internet, phone bill went up $35 so they are on my list to call next week. They are adding some sports channels, and rearranging some others. Makes me nuts! We have so many duplicate channels now it's ridiculous. We do have another cable company in town but I hate to go through the hassle of switching if I can get our's to give me a better deal.

"Gma," I'm glad Jack will be working during the daylight hours. Keeping my fingers crossed it won't last long. What time will his day have to start? I'll bet WM was busy, but then again maybe not. It was pretty quiet around here last night. Our excitement was to take the car and pickup to the car wash. That was early evening so maybe things livened up later. We don't have fireworks around here. Maybe they don't work when it's so cold.

Susan, I will think positive thoughts about the hurricane possibilities this year. Will also keep my fingers crossed for you. Bob has a cousin who retired to a condo on the Florida coast, 9th floor. I asked her what she would do if the hurricane warning is for her area and she said she would be heading to NY to her daughter's. I hope she has enough time if that happens.

My dryer should be done so better keep moving. I hope this is a great year for everyone!
  • Good morning to you all. Jack just left for his first 12 hour shift, but at least I am feeding him. He doesn't want to eat that late so I cooked tonight's dinner for him last night then packed it up for him for later and packed up some chicken for myself to have with a salad tonight at the regular time.

I have my hair appointment this morning so will be heading upstairs to shower in just a little while. I have an hour of "Law and Order" to watch first. I am a "Law and Order" junky. I like the original show. Tomorrow afternoon is my waxing then finish getting ready for the hospital. I have to get up at 3 AM so I can shower and such as we have to be there at 5 AM.

Susan: Hope you had a great time with your friends. We did what we needed to do yesterday then were home for the rest of the day. Jack had a bunch of bowl games he wanted to watch. I sure hope we don't have a bad hurricane season. Our cruise is the first week of October.

Jean: Jack has to get up the regular time at 5 AM but the worst part other than the long hours are he won't get home until 7:30 PM at the earliest and have to be in bed no later than 9 PM to get enough sleep so he doesn't have much down time. It is 29 here this morning and I saw a week and a half for now it looks like snow for us. I have to say we have very little problem with our satellite except for weather. We actually have 2 satellites, one regular and one HD. Usually when the HD goes out we can click the regular one and can continue watching what we were watching. We really like our Direct TV. I don't think any of the tv companies are inexpensive anymore for sure. What frost my cookies is getting up at 5 and turning on the tv and the cable channels all seem to be infomercials for the most part. I pay for programs not for being bothered to buy ridiculous stuff.

You all have a great day.
