What non-gym exercise do you do?

  • I actually gave up the gym a few years ago, I've always hated it and could never stay commited. Pre prego I started running outside, pavement and trails, loved it!!! Doubt I'll ever set foot in a gym again. I do have a treadmill at home for when I absolutely cannot run outside. DH and I went biking as well. Now I just go for walks outside, since I'm about to pop! lol, but after I'll be back to outside running..well ,walking at first
  • I swim laps in my friend's pool 3 days a week and do Leslie Sansone Walk at Home videos a couple days a week.

I'm starting physical therapy for my shoulder next week hoping to improve strength and mobility so I can attempt Jillian Michaels' 30-day Shred program. I think I've gotten my knees strong enough with swim and walking (plus taking 40+ pounds off didn't hurt), but my arthritic shoulder isn't improving as the weight comes off.
  • I walk a lot. I play tennis (by myself against a wall).
  • swimming, even though my pool is tiny, I swim the perimeter so at least I get the distance around. I also go for nightly walks. This summer weather is PERFECT for a nice stroll.
  • I haven't been to the gym since spring arrived.

I run, go to yoga class, do yoga videos, walk, go to bellydance class. I just tried a hula hoop class, and it was so fun (but hard!) that I bought a hoop.
  • There're so many great strategies the other folks have shared. Awesome. I join the bunch with no-gym workouts:
    1) no car so the family travels all by foot, bike, or public trans
    2) exercise by video (4 x week; FIRM 500 calorie burn with Kelsie Daniels)
    3) bike for exercise

I'm older now so it's harder to lose weight. I'm now exercising and eating in a formula of 15% calorie deficit. It's tough but seems to be working...FINALLY.
  • I love to Hike - and I am fortunate to live in Colorado where hiking is accessible and enjoyable to do.
  • Outside of the gym I play roller derby relatively competitively, and ultimate frisbee just for fun both a couple times per week. And some hiking/swimming whenever I get the chance, but again just for fun, not seriously aimed at fitness.

All this hula hoop talk makes me think I should dig my old corduroy beast out though...
  • I walk my dog on paved trails about 3.5 miles a day. On weekends, I try to drive somewhere to dirt trails, or else try to go swimming at my mom's condo pool.

I just picked up some rollerblades at a garage sale, but haven't had the guts to try them yet! I also have cross-country skis for outdoor exercise in winter. I have a bike and a vision of myself using it to run errands, but I haven't gotten a lock for it yet. I also have a hula hoop in my garage that I am going to drag out, thanks to this thread.

I also do a lot of yard work with manual methods (walking mower instead of riding mower, hand tools instead of power tools), and I garden. [I wouldn't count these as exercise, but steps to being less sedentary.]
