I always wondered if the booze (vodka in my case) actually helped or that the hangover felt worse than the cold and thus cancelled out the cold a bit? Now I don't ever get colds and use only nasal spray and aspirin - how boring!.

I suddenly have one less dog walk so have some time. DH is making dinner - snarling raging feral bear that he is (his boss sent him an email that destroyed his mood for at least the next week I'm sure). I should be putting out fall clothes - since I'm dogsitting for 10 days starting this coming weekend I guess I better get to it right now.

Mudpie and Kery, My mother was a total teetotaler but she always had a bottle of bourbon on hand for medicinal purposes. When I had a cold, out came the Hot Toddy...I looked forward to having a cold.

Hopefully over the hump of whatever bug we've been dealing with. Back on exercise today. Marti is still fighting it off, but insisted on part of a hike tonight. Fall is coming on quick. Temps in the mid-30's last night. Leaves beginning to turn. So much to do before winter.

Bill - The astronauts have that freeze-dried ice cream but they all look pretty fit. Maybe a long passage on a little sailboat?

Is there anything more frightening than a beautician with a scissor in his/her hand ? I am almost ready to ask my beautician to take a blood oath that she will not cut my hair. I am in the process of growing out a layer cut which she is bound and determined to layer cut again. I, on the other hand am thinking of something like a blunt cut which means letting the layers grow out. My idea is that if I let it grow and hate it I can always have it cut. Her idea is the layer cut would look so much better. True , but I want a change, darn it, it is my hair !

So funny, bargoo. My DD for years wanted a layer cut but no one would do it for her (she has very fine hair and they said it wouldn't work). I finally got her to go to my stylist who agreed to do it and it was super cute!

Just speak your mind and tell her to leave it alone!!!

That is why I am letting it grow out first.....just have to live through the awkward stage.

Hair always grows out. I am currently sporting a spiky, very short cut because I had it whacked all the way back to my gray roots. It's taking some getting used to - in my age bracket, this color is probably about as common as lime green.

Re the colds, we have always downed a shot at the first throat tickle, on the theory that we could "sterilize the area". It might actually work. Could this be the origin of "It's worth a shot"?

I visited the bath remodeler yesterday, and have been floating on air ever since. Not only does it cost less than I thought, they do install this material and it goes up really fast. AND ... to order it takes 2-2 1/2 weeks, which is exactly when I will need it. Cha-ching! I almost cried. We could have this bathroom completely done in a month!

My BF goes to a woman to get his haircut who is a pyromaniac but didn't do any time for reasons of insanity. Literally. He's on the volunteer fire department... he got called to the fire. Since she lit charcoal on her ex's living room floor it didn't do much damage. Charcoal takes a while to get going. I can't believe he still goes to her. His response: "Well she's fine when she's on her medication! It's only $10... besides, I've never done anything to p!$$ her off."

I'm one of the fine-haired people whose hair does look bad in layers. Well, it doesn't look bad when it's freshly washed and styled, but when it's in longer layers it tends to get dirty and stringy looking quickly. I've been doing the sideswept bangs this year and like those, though. I think one's stylist should give an opinion, but if it's rejected, go ahead and do what the client wants!

Yesterday I ended up working in the lab until 9:30 PM and had to miss my play rehearsal. I felt terrible, and plan to apologize to everyone on Wednesday at our next rehearsal. The samples were time-sensitive and I had to get them on dry ice immediately or they would be no good, and it was also a situation where I couldn't have done this on another day, and didn't know I'd be getting such a big amount of the samples to process ahead of time. I was at the store getting more dry ice this AM and ran into one of my cast who asked if I would be at rehearsal Wednesday in what I thought was a sort of snarky tone. It just made me feel worse even though I'm probably being oversensitive. I don't feel like I'm being a very good director this time around. I have tonight off so I'm going to try and sit down for a few minutes and brainstorm about the show. I'm left feeling generally unsettled and disorganized today.

I think the astronauts work out on the space ship to try and preserve their muscle tone. How boring, though. What if you get a craving for something on the spaceship? I guess you have to wait. I couldn't live without fresh fruit.

Megan your BF is braver than I would be , I don't need any insane haircutters....the sane ones are fearful enough.
Good luck with the cast I would expect that most will be understanding but there is alway one who has to be snippy about the inconvenience or whatever.

A friend of mine also does that, except his whisky is something like 60° (maybe even a little more). I bet nothing can survive that. (Including his oesophagus, but that's another story.) ^^

My dad used to give my brother and I shots of whiskey when we had colds - my mother used to hate taking us to church on Sunday after a Saturday night cold. Said we smelled like we'd spent the night at a cheap bar. Dad said that there was nothing cheap about his whiskey.

DH and I are holding up okay, but tired. Things move so fast in life, things like this don't slow them down a bit.

Just encountered a word in a British novel and came to realize that we don't own an epergne (which you all know is pronounced to rhyme with 'a fern'). It's obviously too embarrassing to ask friends in real life - they're probably already laughing at me.

I can grab one using Buy It Now eBay: Silver Epergne, but think I should check out Costco as well.

I feel so out of it.

When do I use my epergne? Will it be considered ostentatious? What do I put in it?
