  • I have a major fast food problem. Especially when I am depressed. I agree that going to Subway or Panera and choosing lighter options is a good start. I also recently read Morgan Spurlock's book, 'Don't Eat This Book' which really put into perspective what is really in the food, and what it can do to someone. That slightly turned me off to any of it. I'm still fighting off some cravings for sure. I think having reasonable snacks accessible at all times can help. If you aren't really hungry, then stopping won't sound as good. Fighting the big cravings, and allowing something occasionally can help as well. If you tell yourself it's not off limits your brain may not want it as badly.

Cravings suck, especially when McD's is 1/2 a mile from my house and I have to drive by it regularly. Reading about it did help though. When you realize the beef is barely beef and the fries are barely potatoes it loses some of it's sparkle. I try to really focus on how I feel after I eat that stuff to. I never feel good. But eating whole, real, fresh foods makes me feel fueled, not weighed down. Eating a bunch of homemade chicken with herbed green beans is terribly satisfying, though I often regret the McD's after i eat it.
  • Quote: For myself, the gross out method worked. Read up on where they source their food, the treatment of the animals, how really really poor the quality. It's really scary and gross. My daughter is five so she does not really care about this at all (although she's growing a conscience about animals) so there are times when she has the occasional Happy Meal (but I draw the line at chicken nuggets. OMG. Gross).
This. I've read too many books and seen too many documentaries to eat most fast food. I only eat it when I have to. As in, we are traveling and there are no other options besides starve.

I think planning ahead, and keeping shelf stable foods in the car, will help.
  • I always meal plan, so I'm never wondering what I'm going to eat later and if I really have a craving for something like a burger and fries, I go for it - I get potatoes, meat, etc and make my craving meal at home.
