  • Beach Patrol, definitely those muscles need to be worked, I am not contesting that I am contesting the most effective way to work them. In addition to what Arctic Mama said, a lot of trainers and fitness experts don't recommend the abductor or adductor because it's a movement not done in a natural plane of movement. In other words, it's not one that we would normally do in regular day and therefor not effective. The adductor/abductor requires the thigh to force weight outward while in a bent position- which you'd never do in real life.Better are squats and side-to-side dynamic standing moves (similar to what you'd see in aerobics or with a resistance band workout) that engage the inner thigh as part of a larger muscle group when the leg is standing- a more natural movement.

If you do a quick search there are lots of articles out there- including the Sticky thread in the Exercise forum I linked above- contesting the efficacy of the adductor and abductor. You'll also find a lot that say it's perfectly fine. However, given that there is so much controversy and skepticism over its effectiveness- that the fitness community is so divided on whether or not these are beneficial- it's probably worth opting for exercises like squats which are much more widely accepted as extremely beneficial.
  • Just wanted to tell the OP that I am currently doing Jillian Michael's Quick Trouble Zones workout and the inner thighs are one of the "problem areas" targeted and I am starting to see a big difference.

Yeah, I agree - I do nothing but squats & lunges myself... (plus walking, biking & swimming)
and I did say "squats & lunges, squats & lunges, squats & lunges" in my original post

...but I suppose posting that big'ol honkin' picture of the adductor machine kinda over-shadowed that part.
  • Haha we are in total agreement
