Jendiet, that is awful--I'm sorry you had to go through that. With my strep outbreaks, there's no pus, just a sore throat and I'm really, really tired. I always test positive. I'm shocked I didn't test positive this time. I'm really hoping the endo turns up something. I will definitely keep you guys posted!

Sorry guys--I meant to update earlier!
I went yesterday--they were very nice and answered all my questions, and really listed to what I had to say. I went in with a typed paper stating my medical history, diet, exercise, sleep patterns, medications, etc.
They too 9 vials of blood, made me collect my urine for 24 hours, and I had to do an ultrasound on my thyroid because the dr. felt some "nodules" on it. I go back on Friday for the results--he was so sweet! He said he knew I was a teacher, so he arranged for all my tests to be on one day, so I could enjoy the rest of my spring break
He said he is fairly convinced it is Hashimoto's disease.
I will definitely let you guys know what happens!

Hey guys,
I just got back from the endocrinologist. The reason I am sick and tired all of the time is because I have a disease called Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Here is a link about it:

I will be ok!!!! There is no cure, but the doctor is putting my on a thyroid medication that should help, and is making me take a vitamin d supplement because my D levels are low and that is also making me exhausted. I am actually relieved to know that there is a reason i am sick all the time.

I also unfortunately have a small tumor on my thyroid. I am waiting for them to schedule my biopsy appointment to see if it is benign or malignant.

I feel calm right now, and I know God is watching over me and will see me through this. Thank you guys!

Isn't Hashimoto thyroidism the same as low thyroid functioning? I had an enlarged thyroid twenty years ago and I was on a synthetic thyroid medicine for about 2-3 years since being on anti-depressants can and does affect your endocrine functioning properly. Once I tested normal I was taken off of it. I still had the symptoms but the doctor thought I was fine. I hope the tumor is okay. Good luck and glad that you have a name for your symptoms. Stress can also make you really exhausted. I have found that really upping my B vitamins (now, I take Emergen-C) really counteracts that. I am going through some extreme stress right now and I get tired easily.

Nope, Hypothyroid is where you have a low or none functioning thyroid. Hashimoto's is when your body sees your thyroid as an invader and attacks it. My mom has hashimoto's. It's probable that I have it as well, but I haven't gotten to the endo yet (just too busy )

Good luck with the biopsy chicky. Are they sure it's a tumor and not just a goiter.. which is common in hashimotos?

I specifically asked if it was a goiter and the doctor very patiently showed me plastic model thyroids with different types of growths on them. He was wonderful and answered every question I threw at him. He even put down his clipboard to hug me. My biopsy appt is this Thursday, and I will have results on the 31st. He promised me he "wouldn't let it get any bigger," and that makes me feel better. It's a little smaller than a centimeter right now.

And I'm imagining that a biopsy isn't going to be comfortable.....

I really need to get on the ball and make my appointments for an endo and cardiologist (I need to have an ultrasound done on my heart )

Well.... I don't know if this helps (as I knock on wood and bite my tongue) but I recently heard that thyroid cancer is almost never fatal. But I still hope it's absolutely positively without a doubt nothing!

Thank you!!! My mom had a benign mass on her thyroid (and her thyroid) removed this past November. I have the feeling this will be very similar. I feel pretty calm about everything. God and my loved ones will get me through this!

I knew you were vit D deficient when I read your initial post. People, if you are reading this....please take a vit D supplement. Talk w/your doctor but most people need 1000-2000 IU per day! Some (like me) need a TON more. I take a prescription for 50,000 IU per week. I cannot tell you the difference in health. I used to always be sick and now I am not. Fatique also greatly improved. It is soooo easy to take vit D.

Chickybird---GL w/your biopsy....I was diagnosed w/thyroid cancer last year and hope your results are benign!

Ah.. no soapbox required! There was a study recently that most people who are over weight are vit d deficient. (Something like, the more you weigh, the more you need, and your body functions poorly without it.) I take vit d supplements as well, about 5000UI a day after reading this study. (As well as calcium and magnesium, which are needed in order for vit d to be processed.) I've also read it can take 6 months + for your levels to return to normal. I've been doing it for about 3 months. I haven't noticed too much lately, and I haven't really noticed a difference with the levothyroxzine they put me on, but ... I finally got an appointment for an Endo.

But it's in June.

I have my blood work redone in May... my mom is surprised my doctor is waiting so long, but I think he thought I was going to see an endo before I went back to see him. Unfortunately, dealing with everything at home (my grandmother died last week after a three month stint in and out of the hospital... and my dog had a stroke 2 weeks ago!) I put it on the back burner. Not my greatest idea, but it was out of necessity!

I just got the results--my tumor is BENIGN!!!!! I do not have celiac disease either!!!!
I go back in two months to test my levels. The dr. said that he will remove the nodule if it gets any bogger or causes me discomfort. I am very happy with that.
I have been 905 gluten free the last two weeks and have not been bloated at all. I think I will stick with it, but not freak out if I eat something with gluten in it every so often. I've also lose 6 pounds
