  • z, its great you made lemonade from lemons with your car accident. Getting more walking in as part of routine life is one of the best ways to live actively. Its just so simple. Its a disadvantage of country life, but I do try to park in one place and walk around town when I go to town, for the same reasons.
WIll post my blood work later today, I am told its at the office, I am so excited to see it!
  • New regime changes have me seeing my first stable night time and morning sugar levels!! I've been consistently under 10 every night and following morning so far for the past week. Really liking my numbers atm!

I was given a tentative diagnosis of acute dyspraxia and Irlen's Syndrome by the school Psychologist guy, so I'm working around that now too. Going to Crufts next week, so I'm uber excited and happy about that!

    Hope everyone else is well!
  • HI CASSANDRA ~ glad to hear that you are getting some control in your numbers with some modification in your plan. My youngest sister had dyslexia (which is similar to Irlen's) but after my mom took her off her epilepsy meds (phenobarb) and with some 1-on-1 study help, she did much better in school and went on to graduate college (plus they discovered she needed glasses at that time too).

With some vision therapy, and other learning tricks (you may be referred to a neurologist and a therapist), you could have a lot of improvement. My parents bought my sister a special pocket-size dictionary which she kept with her at all times, and this helped her immensely. I have an electronic speller that I type in what I think the word sounds like and it tells me what the correct spelling is. I think you can get all kinds of these devices these days. Hope you have fun at the dog show; are you entering some of your own or just going for the fun of it?

MR. Z ~ thanks for all those great ideas about the fish; we have found a source of fish here that often has good prices too. I love doing the fillets in my own seasoned flour or light crumbs; I also sometimes poach some fish in lite Ceasar dressing (this is nice for wild pacific salmon). DH says that he would love to try doing some on the grill this spring as well.

Ms. MAD ~ I have some fish oil capsules, but they are 1000 mg each; we don't have that many choices here for lower doses like you take. I have the "Dr. Atkin's NEW Diet Revolution Book" and in the past, I used my own modified plan to lose weight too. I am still using some of those ideas in my plan now. Like you, I am cutting my carbs down slowly, but found that there is a certain level I can't go below, or I end up hungry or sick. I am also taking a vitamin B-50 complex and other vitamins & minerals as well (as I have deficiencies).

In all honestly, I used a lower carb (not no carb) plan most often in the past and was successful in that; but my gross error was that there was no maintainence phase, which I now know is as important as the losing phase. This version of Dr. Atkin's book stresses the maintainence phase quite a bit right from the get go.

That is the one thing that I would stress to people today regardless of what plan they are on -- when you reach your goal or are getting close to it, remember that you MUST continue your healthy eating for the rest of your life, or you will gain it all back.

Sooo, it is very important to choose an eating style that you like and foods you love, so that you will be able to eat this way for the long term. I am creating dishes that both my DH and I love, and they are healthy too.

Got some good walking in today; we went up town to do a bit of shopping and visit a new place. The came out this afternoon and we have nice warm temps too. We picked up some lunch, so we are having an extra light dinner tonight; probably with some TUNA in there somewhere. Time to go make myself some tea ... ttyl
  • Hello & happy march everyone.

My days continue to be very busy right now. I have actually started an exercise routine that is easy to keep up with so far & my bg is great. I hope to be back chatting with you all soon.
  • Oh my! I feel so guilty about not eating fish and also for skipping the gym for over a week. I just cannot eat fish - and I've cooked it many ways - so it's salmon oil capsules for me. The gym routine has gone because I've felt so lousy in the mornings. I hope by next week to get back on track. BGL has been pretty stable though.
  • RUTH ~ don't feel badly about that; my sister hates fish and won't eat it hardly ever (maybe salmon/tuna when she was young), and she still won't even try it. I used to only eat tuna and salmon at one time too; until I discovered cod or haddock fish sticks. I admit that my favorite are lightly breaded fillets, but after some time, I have found some others I like and ways to cook it that taste great for my DH, who is a fish nut!
  • blood work is back
So the results of 3 months of hard work is that my a1c is down from 5.9 to 5.7

I was borderline/pre-diabetic, and had 2 elevated levels on my 75 g challenge
it was 6.1 fasting and 13.8 1 hr later, down to 7.0 at two hours, this last the only "normal" value.

I didn't do a 75 g challenge on Monday, just had a fasting of 5.6 which is still a bit high but down well. on my glucometer at the same time it was 5.3 so I seem to within a reasonable error range on that. I have lost 10 pounds and will keep going.

my microalbumin in the urine is less than 6, creatinine is normal, but my GFR is a bit high at 57. DOn't know why this should be so, I have never had kidney problems. WOuld this go with weight loss?

cholesterol and lipids are a bit worrisome too, my LDL is borderline high and HDL a bit low, but overall cholesterol is good, and triglycerides are fine.
So I hope with continued exercise the cholesterol levels will improve in the next year.

Overall I think I am doing well, and am on the right track.
Is there enough improvement in my a1c? should I be doing more?
will see doc next week, and will discuss/rediscuss metformin with her.
    any feedback?
  • Good morning chicks. I did an early morning workout that left me felling pretty good. My fbs is good here lately! My kids are home sick from school so now I'm off to take care of them.
  • nice weekend
We had a lovely sunny day, and had a good trail walk. It was fairly warm, and will stay warm for a bit, and that means that the snow is melting. It will be hard to go outside for walking for a bit. Will have to work on figuring that one out.
Blood sugars are good, 5.3 fasting and 5.9 pc today. Have been sticking to the eating plan.
It has been a really busy work week, I was worried about how I would handle it all and still exercise and eat right after the luxury of being able to exercise and eat regularly while I was off work for the month. The exercise was hard, due to the long hours I sometimes work. But when I couldn't get to the exercise, I found I missed it, and arranged to get to it asap. Sometimes I didn't get on the treadmill til 10 pm, but did it anyway.
I have maintained the new diet for over a week, and have good results to show for it.
So all in all, am pretty happy with things. I will plan for keeping with the diet at this level for the month, and see where I am at then.
Don't know if there will be snow for skiing next weekend when I have a couple of days off to do it, but hope to get one more weekend of skiing in before the snow goes completely.

    Have a good weekend everyone.
    thanks for being here!
  • a good day
    Happy International Women's Day everyone!
It was a warm and sunny day here, (14 celsius) and I went to a hot yoga class and had a trail walk today. The forecast will have it warm all week, so I fear no skiing on my weekend off....Must go buy some nordic walking poles.

Have eaten on plan all day and pc sugar was 5.9 so I am happily on track.
In spite of a busy work week have pretty much kept to eating plan and have exercised some. Not as much as I would like, (not just for health's sake, but I actually miss it now when I don't do something most days!) but much more than I would have done before my diagnosis. I used to use busyness as an excuse not to exercise, but NO MORE! I deserve to take the time to take care of myself.
I actually felt like I was treating myself to my exercise today, and really enjoyed it.
Hope everyone is feeling ok. I assume Ruth is really having lots of problems with her back and finding that sitting at the computer is just too much for her. LEts all send healing thoughts and prayers her way!
  • Thank you, FatMad. You must have been in my head. Yesterday was not a good day. I started out with a 2.4 FBGL and it took a while to get back to "alleged' normal. The back is feeling better - it was from the bronchitis which is slowly departing. I did go to the gym but could not do my whole routine because of coughing. Today I will do some gentle treadmill here at home.

Glorious sunny day happening out there. We still have snow but it's melting slowly. Dare I suggest we may have an early Spring? The lads have tapped the maples and are "boiling" - I was given my first syrup yesterday. I avoid eating it like the plague but appreciate their thought. The maple woods is mine but I allow my neighbour to tap the trees. He gives me lots of syrup - great hostess gifts for my city slicker friends.

When the mud and ice disappear from the lane, I am going to start some training walks with the doggage. They get lots of exercise running after squirrels in the yard but need some formal leash work. So does Mummy!
  • Ruth, I am so glad you are feeling better, with your trip coming up, you want to feel well for fun!.
I get syrup this time of year too, its often a thank you for our midwifery care. But I have moved people away from giving me baked goods, and I will have to convince them that syrup if out now too.
Like you say, makes a great hostess gift.
  • Another darn low FBGL - I need to have a bedtime snack because it sure screws up the start of my day. No gym again as I feel rocky but a walk is on the MUST list today.
  • We have been having awesome weather here too; with lots of and +10 C yesterday and today but the sun was only out for a short time this AM. Supposed to be back for tomorrow and Friday though. Our snow is melting too; we can even see some grass here on our front lawn and near the fir tree. Two doves decided to have a swim in a puddle in our laneway which is on a downward slant so it is one of a very few that is clear already.

Been having really good on plan days lately; getting better each day and no junkies for far this month. Going for a record of no junkies this month; hope I make it ...

RUTH ~ glad you are feeling better; ya, it might be better to rest a bit more near home until you are over that flu. A walk down the lane with the doggies shouldn't hurt none as long as you dress up warm.

Take care all and have a great week ... Rosebud
  • hey
Rosebud, good for you, no junkies so far, you can get thru the month.
Ruth, I am also wondering if your infection or your meds are affecting your sugars too. Hope you can find a solution with a nighttime snack. Its no good waking up feeling so crummy.

Have been staying on plan, getting more cravings than last week. THis week of work hasn't been as busy yet. I have the weekend off, and my older daughter and her true love are coming for the weekend, and on Friday we see the younger one off for a March Break holiday of scuba diving off Honduras.
My older girl is really into healthy eating and fitness and will come for yoga with me and will help with cooking, so I should not have trouble staying on plan.
I hope to be down to my end- of- pregnancy- weight with number 2 in time for her to come home for her 18th birthday. SO have made it onto the treadmill the last 2 days, since with the big melt, walking outside isn't really good right now.
Just one day of work left.....
    ahhh
