  • can you get lowfat yoghurt? last night I had plain yoghurt, added espresso powder and splenda. it was enough dessert-like to satisfy me.

my "weakness" is sugar and starches. but after the first several days of phase 1 (I'm on day 12 of phase 1) I stopped having sugar/starch cravings.

This "diet" - way of eating - was developed especially for people with heart disease.
  • Hey Paula,
Glad to have you here, I have been on and off these forums for years now and when I saw your post , I had the same questions when I started the SBD, I will say that it really works great though and the longer you are on it the better things get, the weightloss and overall health benifits are just amazing, and the second phase is really the healthiest diet out there in my eyes, I am back on phase one as well and today is my first day, maybe we can help each other and keep in contact to get through these first two weeks, I wish you all the health in the world, hugs and prayers, Christie
  • Hi Paula, I'm 56 and today is day 13 for me. Phase 1 gets easier as the days pass. I lost 6 lbs the first week. If you stick to the plan you will lose the weight. I'm been trying a lot of new recipes. I don't get bored when I eat a variety of dishes. You will find a lot of encouragement on this site. I try to read the new posts every day. Like a I said before, 3FatChicks forum is better than attending a WW meeting. I'll be praying for you and your husband. God bless!!
  • "Hey...hey Paula!" Sorry, couldn't help the song reference. I'm sure you get that from time-to-time.

Just wanted to pop in and welcome you and your DH to the SB group. May your time here and on this website be very beneficial to you.

Good luck on your weight loss journey.
  • Thanks everyone and SunshineCA your not going to believe this but your the only one to have used the song reference LOL.
  • Apologies!
Sorry, Paula, but I missed a to you and your DH.

Come and join the other Phase I chickies on the Chick Check thread here.
  • I haven't read the other responses yet, but I'd say that you'd have a greater chance of success if you cook the recipes in the books and cookbooks. SB isn't all about eating a bunch of meat. It seems to me that people who don't like this diet try to do it by eating a bunch of boring eggs and plain meat. The recipes are so delicious that I have found many vegetables I didn't think I liked. I've found that I CAN eat eggs or egg beaters without catsup. Who'd have thought it?
  • Hi Paula!!! My name's Paula too. I get the "Hey Paula" song from people all the time, too. I couldn't resist.

Anyway, I highly recommend this diet, especially if you have insulin resistance and/or PCOS.

I've been on this diet since June, and since then I've lost 18 pounds. I'm never hungry, I get to eat food that tastes good; and most importantly, it helps stop the sugar and carb craving cycle.

So does it work? In my opinion, yes. And I see myself eating this way for the REST OF MY LIFE.

I've found really good recipes on this board, as well as online. If you do a google search for South Beach Recipes, you'll get quite a few sites. I've been able to tailor a bunch of recipes to make them more SB friendly. I've also gotten really good SB recipes from Kalyn's Kitchen and recipezaar. In my opinion, I wasn't too thrilled with the recipes from the official SB books, but that's just my two cents.

Good luck! You can do this!
  • hi paula!

haven't read the whole thread (rhyme!) but i can tell you sbd works! i can see how it might seem a little strange- my german friends think i am INSANE to curb my carb intake as bread ,bread and bread are the main staples here but it's not about no carbs so much as good carbs..after 2 weeks of p1 you probably will not recognize urself for lack of carb cravings! i wish u and dh all the best on ur journey.

    cheers!

    jan
