This isn't really so much jerky behavior as it is inconsiderate. I am a nurse on an OB-Gyn floor and when people are just getting into their room after having a baby or having surgery, you wouldn't believe the visitors that come up that very day, sometimes within a few hours. I'm not talking about family here, these are friends, neighbors, etc. I have even had some visitors come to the floor and ask for a patient by their first name only. When asked what their last name is they don't even know it. I want to say "If you don't know them any better than that, you don't need to be here". With HIPPA we can't give them a room number without the complete name and they get really ticked.
The new parents don't get any privacy or rest. These same visitors are reluctant to leave when asked and hang around for hours. The mothers are completely exhausted and get no privacy for breastfeeding or getting cleaned up. They don't know how to tell their visitors to leave without seeming rude and end up putting up with it. Sometimes I have to actually ask them to step out while the new mom is learning to breastfeed. You mention that the baby needs to nurse and they just sit there and look at you. Do you really think she wants to bear her breasts in front of you? If we nurses say anything, we have to be careful not to appear rude, but I think their behavior is very rude. New moms need time to rest, bond with their babies and learn infant care and feeding. Also these mom's phones ring all day long. Please remember if you have friends in the hospital that they need their rest and privacy. Waiting to visit the new family may be more appropriate at a later date.
Sorry, this is really a pet peeve of mine!
