Question on a Root Veggie
Hey gals, my mom is in love with Rootebegas (sp?). Any idea if they are evil or not?
|
Rutabagas or "Swedes" are big turnips. Turnip Greens are allowed on Phase I and turnips (the root) are allowed on Phase II although they are not listed in the food list. (They are in the GFGC Guide as "good". I hate them cooked but love them raw!

Thanks Ruth, didn't want to drag out the books!

I thought rutabaga's had a relative high GI. I bought some in the beginning thinking they were the same as turnips someone on one of the lists told me differently.
I did a google search and they are depending on the web site between 72 and 103. I don't have my book handy. Those numbers came off mendosa's site. Sarah |
Well, there are small turnips - sort of white with purple tops. Then there are bigger ones which are yellowish with purple tops and keep for the winter. The last are the rutabagas or "Swedes".
The bigger ones are probably higher GI than the small ones BUT they are still much lower than beets and parsnips. One cup of cubes has 38 calories, 8 carbs and 2 grams of fiber. That is probably why the Guide lists them as good and lists beets and parsnips as limited and very limited respectively. I hope this clears this up. |
Thanks a ton Ruth. My mom couldn't be happier!
