Cool Whip Question!????

While doing my weekly shopping this weekend, I noticed that the Fat Free Cool Whip had more carbs and sugar than the regular cool whip. Why is it recommended that FF cool whip be used???

I know SF is used but where do you see Fat Free recommended?

Ruth - probably from the Kraft Foods website - the section where they highlight their SBD friendly foods. I copied this off the site:

"COOL WHIP LITE and FREE are now recommended products of the South Beach Diet.
Creamy COOL WHIP LITE and FREE are perfect ways to add something sweet to your balanced diet. Use it as a topping on your favorite treats or try one of our South Beach Diet recommended recipes."

Below that was a chart showing the calories/fat and carbs per serving as follows (first number is carbs then calories and lastly fat grams):

"Products
COOL WHIP Regular 2g 25 calories 1.5g
COOL WHIP Extra Creamy 2g 25 calories 2g
COOL WHIP LITE 3g 20 calories 1g
COOL WHIP FREE 3g 15 calories 0g
French Vanilla COOL WHIP 2g 25 calories 1.5g "

Hope this helps!

Here's the deal. Cool Whip has sugar, but heavy cream has fat. The fat in Cool Whip is Trans fat, and therefore the worst kind. There is no perfect SBD safe substitute for whipped cream, but if you get the Cool Whip Free, which has, in a single serving, no fat, you are getting no fat and very little sugar. You could also make your own whipped cream from heavy cream and splenda, but then you have a great deal of fat. It's a toss up. Personally, even small bits of sugar can affect me greatly, but the Cool Whip Free never has, since I do keep it to a small amount.

Hope that helps...it's definitely one of the confusing things about SBD! :dizzy:

I never use *any* Cool Whip or Fat Free half and half - I think it's inconsistent with diet, personally. If I want to top something I'll either take some f/f sour cream and sweeten it, or take a small amount of heavy cream, whip it and sweeten it, or leave it off altogether. For me, I'd prefer a little something 'natural' with added fat than eat something with a bunch of weird fillers and sugar. Just my personal preference though...
