Question about Atkins products

  • Dh is having problems with this diet cause he's on the road all day and eating a good lunch is sometimes difficult. He was wondering if he could have an Atkins shake or meal replacement bar, and he was also wondering about the Atkins Wraps at Subway. I told him I thought it would be OK since we are in Phase 2 now and since he's be using these products as meals and not snacks, but I figured I'd check and see what you guys think.
  • I'm on the road a lot, too, and recently stopped at a Subway. They made a salad with anything I wanted from their selection of meats, cheeses, veggies, etc. I also chose the oil & vinegar. They have a brochure with nutritional breakdown. Maybe they have a web site with this info., too. Haven't tried the wraps yet.
  • LOVE the wraps! They are "approved" for Phase 2 of Atkins, and I don't see why not SBD. Use the light mayo, oil/vinegar, and go easy on the full fat cheese. My man is on the road a lot too during the day and I only WISH he would get the wraps!!
  • Atkins shakes and bars are NOT recommended on this plan - they have too many sugar alcohols which act like real sugar and keep those cravings alive!
  • Phooey Ruth.......I just knew you were gonna come on here and bust my chops

OK, let me put this another way then............would an Atkins shake be better than a snickers, coke and bag of chips? Cause that's what his lunch used to consist of. LOL, I'm not trying to be difficult here - I do understand what you're saying. But I also have to be realistic about the situation that he's in and try to help him make the best choice available at the time. He used to drink the Slim Fast shakes and I thought that maybe the Atkins shakes would be better.
  • Well...when you put it that way ....Atkins shakes would be better than Slimfast.

Too bad I'm such a of a Moderator!
  • LOL....no, you are a great mod and you tell it the way it is. I appreciate that even if it's not always the the answer I want to hear!

I am really trying hard to get hubby to stick with this cause if he goes back to his old ways it's gonna be **** on me too
  • Doesn't SlimFast have a new carb-concious shake out? I know that they at least have bars...

Has your hubby been exposed to a lot of sugar alcohols? I know for me it's a BAD idea, that is, unless I want to be like Ruth, minus the Barium... The little warning on the side of the label that says MAY cause laxative effect should say MOST DEFINITELY WILL, SO DON'T EAT THIS CAITY.

What about packing a lunch? They make little consoles for cars/trucks that plug in to the adapter to keep things refridgerated. I got one for my hubby. Under $40 at Kohls. Totally worth it.
  • I used to do Atkins and I bought a lot of products with sugar alcohol and was not affected by it. I have recently switched to South Beach but had to stop for a few weeks due to some tests I have to have done. I am excited about getting back on to South Beach. I was getting bored with Atkins and I was wanting to add more fibre in my diet. In regards to the Atkins bars, I came across some info that addressed this. Here is the scoop....

Q: I have a fast-paced job, and lunch is always a problem for me. Can I just eat one of Dr. Atkins' bars for lunch, or is there too much fat and carbs in them? If not, is there a bar or something else you would suggest? Also, can I use any regular salad dressing as long as it contains only 1 to 3 g of carbs?

Dr. Agatston: The regular dressing is fine with 1 to 3 g of carbs. When you're on the go, nuts, cottage cheese, and string cheese are helpful. As far as the food bars, it depends what is in it. As long as it is not high in saturated or hydrogenated fats, then it's OK.

Being on the road is hard so if having the atkins bar helps, then have it. Just another FYI - in addition to deducting fibre and sugar alcohol counts, you can also deduct glycerin and polydextrose to reach total carb count. I know we don't have to count carbs on South Beach but sometimes it helps to know facts about other diets in order to make connections to basics/info about food.

    Hope this info helps.
