reading nutrition labels

Now that I've been reading/posting for two weeks, and I'm entering phase II tomorrow, I have a big question. It seems that people will post concerns about certain foods, like particular brand names, or types of bread, etc, and then someone else will look up ingredients and determine if they are SBD safe or not.

I am wondering how you determine this. I know we are avoiding processed foods (though I have some concerns about things like 'butter spray' -- I mean, what is that stuff?), and sugar, and too much fat...but are there certain things you look for in the ingredients list or the nutrition labels? I'm also wondering about how to know if recipes are SBD safe.

I would so appreciate any help!!!

Sonja, the fewer the ingredients the better IMHO. If you have a specific food, let me know and I'll give it a look. We are trying to avoid things like enriched flour in lieu of whole wheat, corn starch, high fructose corn syrup or HFCS and cane sugar syrup. The ingredients are more important than the nutritional content.
