Dogs and Treadmills

So I read about this man training his dog to use a treadmill. Has anybody ever done this? I can't imagine it would be easy. My dog won't even get near the thing!!

I have a dog treadmill. (Bigger dogs need a longer tread than humans so mine has a 6' bed). They are working dogs. It is relatively easy with some bits of food and patience. Dog Pacer has some good youtubes on how to do this you could adapt to a regular treadmill.

My main use is to get them moving at a trot faster than I can walk as I would rather do that than rely on a lot of ball throwing for routine exercise and my neighborhood is not good to do roadwork with them on a bicycle. If I dog is overweight I would start with cutting their food and walking them up and down hills. Being aware of the time of day, temperature etc. Dogs don't typically handle heat as well as we do.

This is one of my dogs on a treadmill. I was showing my husband how to do it.

I had done some reading on how walking my dog on an incline would help her patellar luxation issues...but she won't even get near the thing. I'll have to keep at it! I've never known anybody that's actually done it until now!!

I would not think of putting a dog with an orthopedic issue on a treadmill without a vet consult. Your best bet is to find a rehab vet and see what they suggest. They are quite affordable for a few sessions. They also have underwater treadmills that take weight off the joints for rehab.

My chow chow would scream exhaustion. Furthermore, it won't do good for his hind legs. Nope, will just stick with the normal usual walks with him.

You can't replace the walks with a treadmill, but I think that you can use them from time to time if a dog really needs some extra walk or any other way to spend energy. I have a westie and they are so lazy dogs I haven't consider getting her that, but for a husky, collie or some high-energy dogs, well, maybe it is OK occasionally.

I have GSDs and cannot walk fast enough to give them exercise of any value because they won't break into a trot at my fastest walk.. Offlead walking yes. Too much ball throwing can be hard on joints. Treadmill with upslant pretty good workout. I cannot jog due to minor prolapse and concern about an old ankle injury.

I think you need to start play with pets more together, Anyway animals help people to resolve stress and fatugue. I used to spend time together with my cute and tiny Shih Tzu doggy. I used to read different information about my dog like bathe a shih tzu Such information will be extra useful for guys who have plan to buy dogs.

My dog can use the treadmill, but I taught him that from a young age. Of course, he prefers walks outside, and the treadmill is just a bit of fun. I found fleas on my dog, so I’m not taking him to the dog park with other dogs at the moment. But I’ve heard about Nexgard Without Vet Prescription , and I’m thinking of trying it. I can see that he’s feeling down, and I want to get him better as soon as possible.
