New here - 33 weeks - gaining too much!

  • Hi, I'm new here. My friend suggested I check you all out, so here I am. I'm 33 weeks pregnant with my second child. My first daughter is 13.5 years old. My husband and I are expecting our first son together. I started my pregnancy at 153, and that was after losing 20 pounds on WW. Well, I've manage to eat like a total pig for this entire pregnancy and I currently weigh 217. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've eaten horribly. Now I must stop and try not to gain much more in the last 7 weeks.
In order to do so, I know I'm going to need lots of support, so here I am!
I look forward to chatting with other mums to see how they are handling the weight gain of pregnancy. I need to learn how to eat better in these last weeks. I plan to breastfeed and hope to lose weight while doing so.
I'm originally from Texas, but currently live in Georgia where my husband is stationed. He's Army.

  • Welcome!! Because I am starting out overweight to begin with my doctor wants me to maintain my weight. Which for me is very hard, I love to eat. With my first pregnancy I gained about 70 pounds and didn't do a darn thing about it. Now I regret that. Anyway, only thing I know is to continue to write down everything like you did with WW. I need to do the same and I know this will help to control what you eat. Good luck.
  • Well, as long as you aren't eating everything in sight, I'd say to try not to worry too much about it. You're being monitored for preeclampsia, right? I have gained everywhere from 10 to 35 pounds over my three pregnancies. Your body knows how much you need to gain a lot better than your doctor was. And the thing is, there's really no agreement on how much to gain, regardless of weight. You'll have some folks, like the PP's, be told not to gain anything, and then my OBs & then midwife never wanted me to worry about it, not even when I started at 252 for my first pregnancy. Try to make sure you eat healthfully, & in the long run that's what matters.

And welcome. I'm from Texas too; we just recently got back to San Antonio.

  • Thanks girls!
The problem is I am eating everything in site!! I'm having a hard time getting a handle on that.
I am hoping to get my test results regarding pre-eclampsia today. I don't know if they'll find need to monitor me or not. We'll see!
  • I don't have any real tips, but I feel your pain! I started out at 165 (already 30 lbs overweight, but down from my high of 197) and at almost 35 weeks I have gained 45 lbs. It is rather depressing but I try not to let it get to me, try to avoid empty calories, and keep thinking positively about weight loss after my son is born. I have done it before and I can do it again! Hang in there and try to fill up on healthy things like veggies and high-protein items? I know, easier said than done...
  • I agree with GBMM...don't worry about it. Honestly, the worrying is worse for your pregnancy than the eating.

I was 5 pounds from my goal when I got pregnant, and I spent the first half of my pregnancy worrying. Then I realized that I was pregnant, and it seemed the more I worried, the more I was gaining. I did have a HUGE craving for popsicles, but stuck to sugar free ones. I'd say I went through a box at least every 2 days.

But all-in-all I was still eating right, yet gaining like crazy. In the end, I put on 62 pounds total. Yet within one week of delivery, I shed 30 of it doing nothing. I still haven't gotten back to where I was, but I'm close, and I'm not putting much effort into it. I do for a bit, drop a few, then just maintain and so-on.

Anyway, I realized during pregnancy that the stress wasn't helping me. So I focused on continuing to eat lean meats, fruits and veggies. But I still felt like I was always starving. And if I was...I ate. I stopped trying to adhere to any calorie limits or monitor what I was eating. I just kept healthy foods around and ate whenever I felt the desire to eat. I couldn't spend 9 months totally obsessed about how much I was eating. And the baby didn't seem to mind the amount I ate. He came out at 9.5 pounds and 21 3/4 inches. LOL
