Where are my nursing mamas?

Surely I'm not the only one still lactating! :carrot:

How are all of you doing? How are your babes? How's the weight loss going?

I've finally posted a bit of a loss. I weighed in about a week ago after my scale having been broken for I don't know how long and found I've managed to not only get back to my prepregnancy weight, but below it, and I've broken 180! I wish I knew how I'd done it, so I could keep doing it. I really thought I'd have gained, since I have been slacking off in the exercise department pretty badly. I guess maybe I was overstressing my body.

We're coming off 42 straight days of rain locally. So the weather breaks Friday afternoon (though not before flooding most of O'ahu!) and it's been sunny since, so of course Sunday I tripped on the stairs and fell down about four of them. The bad part of that is I was carrying Esther. She's fine, though. I managed to twist the living heck out of my ankle, so I can't take advantage of the weather like I want to.

The nursing's going good too. There's a lot more time in between feedings now. And I'm lucky that she's not got teeth yet, even though she's five months. She acts pretty interested in our food, but whenever I offer her solids she spits it back out. Maybe I'll get super-lucky & she'll be late on starting solids like Linda was. The longer it takes for my period to come back, the happier I am!

Yeah, I know she's wearing boys' clothes there. It's just that her sisters love lizards and that has a lizard on it; Rob let the 4-year-old pick her clothes that day.

I'm here...always here, always lactating, too. Hahaha! Esther is so cute! What a happy healthy baby she is!

Well I started at 140 and got up to 202 with the pregnancy. I'm down to 152 now. I don't think the holdup has to do with breastfeeding, but with moving, having a car accident (just got it back out of the shop today - had the accident 3/10!!), just a conglomeration of headaches starting back in February. It's all finally starting to get on track and I've been trying to get back on the wagon with eating right. Didn't pan out today. Had a bowl of Cheerios and banana at 8 a.m. Because son threw up all over me and the bed (snotty nose and it makes him gag and throw up - taking Histex to dry him up), I had to go to the laundry. While there, insurance called and I had to return the rental and pick up my car. I ended up getting lunch at 3:30!! ::sigh:: So I just polished off a yogurt in lieu of a dinner tonight as late as it is, and since I had lunch so late. But none of that's helping the weight loss any.

Mikey's eating 3 meals a day. Usually 1 1/2 to 2 jars of food at a time. And he still breastfeeds...on demand. He usually breastfeeds once or twice a day and a few times at night. He's big as an ox. LOL 6 mo. old as of 4/3, and he weighs nearly 20 pounds and is over 27 inches long. Here's his latest with the Easter Bunny (sinister bunny's been cut out of the picture LOL):

I am here, but only posted once when I was deciding whether to wean my then 15 month old. I am happy to say that my little man is 20 months and still breastfeeding. I have lost only 20 pounds since having him. But I am building muscle b/c my clothes are too big!

Your children are adorable!!!

Milking mama here too, lol. Will type more later though.

I'm still here. I'm on my third course of antibiotics for the year, since I can't seem to stay healthy, down with a severe respiratory infection for 2 weeks this time. DD is more than 6 months old now, eating baby food & cereal (mixed with breast milk) like a horse (3-4 oz 3-4 times a day) and still nursing or taking expressed milk at daycare 6-8 times a day. And she is still just over 16 lbs. I am tired.

But I am 43 lbs down from the highest recorded weight in the great 60 lb pregnancy, so only 17 more to go. I imagine it will go a bit faster when I can stay healthy enough to exercise more than once a month.

Hi! New here, but another milky mama. The babe is six months old now, and although I gained only 16lbs during the pregnancy, I gained another 35 after! Dieting isn't working so well for me. I'm always, always hungry, and so I constantly snack. Try to make it good snacks, but I've always had a sweet tooth. I also started Kung-Fu (martial arts - exercise) a couple months ago. Gained 10lbs, but slimmed down from a size 14 to a tight 10, so I'm not stopping. Does anyone else refuse to weigh until after they have fed their babe? LOL

HoosierHeather 04-11-2006 07:37 PM

I'm still nursing several times a day. We're doing about 1/3 formula, 2/3 breastfeeding or EBM in bottles. Truman's got a fever from his vaccines yesterday so he's been pretty much wanting to nurse and sleep and that's about it.

I am still 3lbs from my prepreg weight. All but those 3 came off really fast. These 3 have lingered. I want to get them off! Things keep coming up where I feel too stressed to focus on my own eating/exercising, but I know in my mind, that if I give myself some time and effort, I'll feel better and be better able to deal with everyone & everything else! :)

My husband just lost his job a week ago. So that's been stressful. Trying to arrange for insurance and trying to get WIC and stuff. We were able to get Tru's shots from the health dept for free, that was great.

Oh there he goes screaming again! :P

I´m also nursing my little darling.

I'm here! I'm christina I have a DD that's a month old today. We are exclusively nursing...and I hope to be able to pump when I go back to work in a few weeks. I am just now getting started on loosing some weight....I am waiting to get some WW stuff in the mail
Hope to get to know everyone!

AnneWonders 04-19-2006 09:36 AM

Hello ladies,

Just got back from a long, 4 day weekend trip where DD went on an almost total nursing strike. Ouch! I had a small hand pump with me that saved the day, but even with that my milk supply is not what it was last week. Last week even before the trip and now again that we're home, she will only nurse first thing in the morning, and right before bed--basically when she is sleepy. She is 7 months old now, and taking baby food very well.

So I guess I'm looking like a part-time nursing mommy now. I have mixed feelings. But I've done a lot of good for her, and I feel good about that, even though nursing never came naturally (or comfortably) to either of us from day one until now. And if she'll continue to nurse a couple times a day, she'll still get a lot of benefit.

But truth be told, I feel about 10 times better than I did last week. I have more energy, can hold a conversation without zoning out, and the nagging colds I had have cleared up. And I am not going to miss that stupid pump!! My attitude and mood are a lot better too. Here's hoping the feelings of inadequacy pass soon.

I haven't been here in awhile but here I am still nursing my little man.

I gained a few lbs but I am back on track and losing again.

My highest was 226 then I dropped to 206 and now I am back to 206 after gaining 5.

zebrabelly 04-25-2006 06:09 PM

nak as we speak!

Still nursing my 11mo ds! He is interested in eating and eats way more than his sister ever did as this age, but still only a tablespoon at the most :lol Only breastmilk otherwise :)

I haven't lost any weight since he was born I don't think (I don't have a scale) but it's been a hard year dealing with some health issues and depression, etc. Hopefully now I am on the upswing and can get back on track. Hopefully!

GreatBigMonsterMomma 04-26-2006 04:36 AM

I love seeing other women who nurse a long time! :D Makes me feel not quite so strange.

Esther's still not showing much interest in food, though she's gnawed on a couple of things here and there, it's just teething and maybe tasting, not eating. She still pushes out anything I put in her mouth and then looks at me like I'm trying to kill her. I'm actually hoping she'll go a long time before starting solids, like my middle did. Breastmilk is so much easier to manage!

One of my friends from high school (the twin of the lady I named Esther after, actually) had a baby this January, and she's breastfeeding too. :cp: It's always good to find gals IRL who are nursing. I know her sis nursed her daughter for about a year, so she's got good support.

zebrabelly 04-26-2006 05:38 PM

yeah my dd gagged on anything until 11months old (I swear to you, I once aimed a carrot at her and she gagged! LOL) and even then almost totally nursed until close to 2 years. Of course she's and extremely picky eater to this day so I'm all stressed and while breastmilk is totally easier, I just want him to like food! :dizzy:

OneHottMama 05-10-2006 08:25 AM

Lactivist here!!!! My DD will be 5 months in next Monday... Exclusively nursing and I am kinda crunchy and plan to let her nurse as long as she is interested...

I was BFed for 22 months and my younger sister for 26 months, so extended BFing is nothing new to me. I was 260ish when I went in the hospital to have our daughter, 230 when I left and am down to 210 as of this morning.

I'm 6'1 and have a large frame, so my goal weight is 175. If I still feel like I could lose from there, then I might try, but I really think I will be fairly lean @ that weight.

GreatBigMonsterMomma 05-10-2006 05:11 PM

That is cool that you were nursed so long. The longest anyone around my age (I'm 26) was nursed was 10 months. I weaned my oldest a week before she turned three (couldn't take the idea of tandem nursing throughout a pregnancy, and it obviously didn't bother her because weaning consisted of me saying "No more choomp," and that was that), but I think the middle one is going to go a lot longer. She was 2 in January & she's still nursing as often as I'll let her; Bobbie was down to like 3 times a day by that age.

Hi,
My name is amanda. I am now nursing my second son. he is 3 months. he was a month and a half early but doing good now. My other one is 2 1/2 and eats like a horse. I nursed my first soem for a year and plan on doing the same with my new little guy. It really is the best thing for him and the easiest for me.

GreatBigMonsterMomma 05-12-2006 05:04 PM

Amanda, did you have problems getting your littlest to nurse in the beginning? My Linda was a month early & we had a hard time to begin with. She was one of those who'd rather sleep than nurse.

almostheaven 05-12-2006 08:59 PM

My son was late, yet he also wanted to sleep rather than nurse. The lactation consultant did these baby situps trying to wake him up to get him to latch on. Had a lot of trouble getting him to latch on and worried it wasn't going to work. Now though, I can't keep him from it. He's an old pro. LOL

HoosierHeather 05-16-2006 07:28 PM

I'm still here too. :) But probably going to give up breastfeeding in a couple of months. I hate it so much. We still do it six times a day but only once a day is it enough to satisfy him - the other five times we have to follow up with 3 ounces or more of formula. I'm just not motivated to increase my supply, and last week I had to pump & dump for 48 hours after taking some medication and I was only getting 12 ounces each day, total. I know he gets more than the pump, but still, it's not a lot. I'll keep it up at least til he's well onto solids (and he's showing interest already, little porker). He was born 4 weeks early but is GIGANTIC, at least to me. :) Maybe boys are just bigger than girls, who knows.

My weight loss... heh. What a joke! I have actually managed to GAIN three pounds, putting me six pounds above my prepregnancy weight. Ridiculous, I know. But finally I have stopped worrying about dieting compromising my milk supply (or rather, being able to use that as an excuse).

I'm toying with the idea of trying to compete in a half-marathon in October. It's a community event, with a lot of people who walk/run or walk completely. Just to complete 13 miles would be insane to me at this point. But maybe it'd be a good motivator, too, and it's still 5 months off so I have time, if I start right now. I tried running last week. I was sore for three days afterwards and I only ran about 1/4 mile!

HoosierHeather, I just read an article today in American Baby about mothers giving up on breastfeeding because of obstacles. They talked about not letting the amount you pump discourage you, because as you said, he gets more than the pump does. They also mentioned not to let having to give him formula at times discourage you. That any breast milk he gets is better than none. And frankly, once he gets well into solids, you'll only be nursing at night and occasionally during the day at times.

It's a very good article. The issue is one I kept in the bottom of the stroller to read while out at lunch. If you're interested in hearing anymore on it, I can get it out of the car and get some more info from it for you. They did say to make sure and talk with a lactation consultant, consult friends who breastfed, and to get in a support group. They stated that women, with husbands who were coached in breastfeeding ahead of time and who felt good about it, had a higher percentage who stuck with it past the usual 12 week mark.

waterchiklet 05-17-2006 03:20 PM

My babe Aidan is 14 weeks and he's an exclusive booby baby. It does get maddening when *all* he wants to do is nurse, but I'm glad I can do it and I wouldn't have it any other way. And the benefits to diet are a major score!

Today's been one of those days, let me tell ya. It seems Daddy can't make him happy so he cries and cries. I don't have to deal with him crying during my *shift* cause I just pop him on the boob and its all better, so I imagine its pretty frustrating for Daddy. I mean I have to listen to it so I know its frustrating. Sooner or later they all come to Mommy to make it better.

GreatBigMonsterMomma 05-17-2006 05:10 PM

Hah-hah Waterchiklet, we call it "the magic boo" around here!

And Almost Heaven, I think I'll just follow along behind you & nod.

Mikey has always made this sound like an owl "Hoooo". So we call him Hoo Hoo, and call it "Hoo Hoo Juice". LOL

Join the club. Mike's been teething since Dec. At his 6 month checkup, doc said he had a "whole bunch" of them coming through. That was a month and half ago. Sheesh!

SKermie17 05-26-2006 06:51 PM

Hi. I'm new here. My DD is 16 weeks old. She takes breastmilk for now and around 6 months I will introduce solids and go from there. I'm only 1 lb away from my prepregnancy weight and I'm feeling great. Having a little trouble getting all my fruits/veggies in, but things are going well. :)

Another Breastfeedin' Mama

I haven't been on this site in a year or two but thought I might find other new mamas here. Sadie baby is 4 1/2 months old. I got up to 225 (40lb gain) and am now down to about 198-200. I've been hitting the gym 2-3 times a week and some days walk 3-4 miles (now that it's nice.) By DH and I just started a two week ban on cheese, ice cream and cookies. He gained a fair amount of weight during my pregnancy too. Honestly? I'll probably lose a few lbs just from cutting those out.

Since starting breastfeeding, I get sugar cravings that remind of nic fits from back in my smoking days. Absolutely insatiable. Has anyone else had this problem?

Goal weight..first 185 (prepregnancy weight)...Final goal 145.:D

GreatBigMonsterMomma 05-27-2006 04:50 AM

Hmm, yah, I'm always wanting sweets. Figured it was a holdover from my pregnant days. :) I live by no sugar added Fudgsicles & the Weight Watchers frozen desserts. You're doing good with the loss, eh?

OK, I'm a sucker for pictures, so here's one of me & all three of my girls:
http://67.18.219.83/image_hosting/we...ls_2_small.jpg

I'm so blind in that picture; I'm not wearing my glasses. That accounts for my odd expression. :lol3: That's Linda on the left, Esther in my lap of course, & Bobbie on the right. It's from just yesterday. And yes, I really am that pale.

flower 06-24-2006 01:14 AM

I am now a nursing mama. Baby Jack is 5 days old. Hope to get support to get fit and eat healthy, I always gain more wait post partum than I did while pregnant.
